Bruce calls for calm but says Sunderland must beat Wigan to get season going

Steve Bruce has appealed for calm from Sunderland fans, but accepts his side must beat Wigan at home next week.

Sunderland have yet to record a victory at the Stadium of Light this season and Mark Schwarzer and the woodwork denied them win over Fulham, who also had their chances to settle an uninspired match.

There were the first muted shouts of `Bruce Out’ as Sunderland struggled against a side who have won only once in six games on their travels.

But with Wigan and Blackburn next on Wearside, in between a visit to Wolves, the unrest could grow.

Bruce said: `We’ll just have to make sure we beat Wigan or try our best to beat Wigan and move on.

'I think the season’s just about to start. I know we’ve played 12 games but we’ve got something like 10/ 12 games in the next seven weeks, which will define our season.

'We hope that we can still improve. I still think there have been improvements – certainly defensively we’re far, far better than we’ve ever been. We’ve just got to find that little bit up front that makes the difference

'We need a bit of patience. There’s an expectation and a pressure. They come in their thousands which creates the pressure. Let’s make no mistake: there’s more pressure here than at a Bolton or a Blackburn or a Fulham or a Wigan because the support we have is quite unique. It’s fantastic. And it’s up to us to give them something to shout about at home.’

Defender Phil Bardsley added: 'Everyone gets a bit carried away don’t they? They think we are going to win leagues and stuff with eight or nine new players but it ain’t gonna happen.

'We need a little bit of patience. People think these teams will just come and roll over but they have top players in their teams.'

Is Bardsley for f***ing real? How is expecting not to be where we are in the league, or expecting at least one bastard win from home games against the likes of WBA, Villa, Fulham, the Mags, expecting to "win leagues and stuff", whatever the fuck and stuff is?

Yet more f***ing comedy by Bruce. Seriously man, how the fuck is he still in a job? I can't ever remember despising a bloke as much as I despise Bruce.

A third of the way into the season and we're two points from relegation, one home win, one away win.

Aye we're upset cos we're not challenging for the title.

If this is what Barsdley really thinks he's a f***ing idiot.

If it's not and he just trying to back Bruce and blame the fans he's a cunt.

I know it's an obvious statement but it may just be an obvious fact that is being overlooked by some staff at our club.
We pay their feckin wages and they are not feckin good enough.
We, are the last people they should be having a pop at.

I wonder what he actually says to players to get them fired up and raring to go. Actual I don’t think I do.

"Come on lads, give it your all. We all know that the crowd will be on your backs early on if things don't go our way, thats the expectations here, I knew that before I came. They expect Champions League etc but don't let it get to you"

Its probably this, seriously

Bardsley can fuck off. If he's too f***ing thick to know what he's talking about he should keep his f***ing mouth shut. Is there no middle ground like "Bardo"? If we're not happy with 3 home wins in 2011 and a start to the season that has been dull, unispriring and lacking in points then we must be expecting to "win the league and stuff"? No, we expect to be doing better than we are and could do with the players going out there and performing better, winning a few home games and, god forbid, giving us something to get a bit excited about, rather than having mediocre players coming out with condescending soundbites.

As for Bruce, I think if I ever want some manure for me garden I'll just hold the fucker by his feet and tell him to open his mouth since shite is about the only thing that seems to come out of it. Just shut up and beat Wigan as a very slight start- that will have us in the heady position of having won one more point than we've played games, putting us on target for a mighty 41 points. Just hope we dont have another post Christmas collapse.

Out of all of them, i thought Bardo would be the least likely to come out with shite like this, you wouldnt think half the team had came from man utd, surely they should have a little clue about dealing with pressure given their background, shows how out of touch with reality they are. they spout the shit when we're doing well to build us up, then when we expect what we have been told its us that is over expecting? bollocks

bruce at the beginning of every season 'we want a good cup run'
bruce/players/quinny at the beginning of the season 'we want to build on last season, we are a top ten team'

just keeping one of these promises would be a bonus like

these kernts are not real...how dare the fans want the team to be doing better than they are! What a f***ing cheek...they must think we are f***ing stupid...They only give a fuck when their money goes in to their banks...wankers the lot of them!!

Exactly- we've had a boring, dull start to the season, won less than a point a game on average, we've lost the home derby, we're out of the league cup having played a Championship side. By all means tell us that you think things will improve (they'll f***ing have to) but dont bother making it sound as if we are ridiculously impatient when we get to the middle of November with 3 home wins all 2011 and are sat 12 games in looking shite having sold or loaned out some of our "big name" players. We are not the only set of fans who would be unhappy, in fact there arent many who would be pleased with it, he'd be under pressure pretty much anywhere

Can't remember the exact quote but Bruce actually said some nonsense about mixing it with the big boys. Conveniently forgets that if anything, he has raised the expectations. Not that any of our fans expect us to "win the league and stuff" but if they did, its his own f***ing fault.

It's a Daily Mail article. I'm suprised Sunderlands form hasn't been blamed on all the foreigners flooding in taking jobs away from British (aka White) people.

But if the quotes are genuine from Bruce and Bardo, then they need their heads checked. And of course the article writer needs checking too. Or maybe he's a Stoke fan and wiped the game from his memory.

fuck off bardsley

Bardsley's comments are very interesting IMHO.

Mainly because if Bruce came out with that absolute bollocks, he'd be slated and people would use this "having a go at the fans" as a reason for him to be sacked...

I wonder if Bardsley's "passion" and that fact that he's never supported Newcastle will save him from being slated?

No, he's just as out of touch with what the fans want as hs manager. No-one has ever said we should win the league, but him beng made player of the season last year tells you all you need to know about our present team and the way we play.

What is Bruce saying to the players. He's already claimed the Man U lads are astonished at our 'demands'.

I don't know ONE fan who is expecting any other than a good go at the top 10 and a cup.

The bottom line is though without Bent, Bruce has got an appalling record and we don't have Bent anymore...

Our record since Kean took over at Blackburn is even worse than theirs, and their fans are in open revolt and have been for months.

I can't think there are many, if any, clubs where you could reach 20th November and have only two home wins in all competitions all year and not have disgruntled fans.

Not in the league it isn't. Not a massive recommendation, but still....

Edit: I can certainly understand Bardsley getting stick. Another example of a footballer engaging mouth before brain. But why so many "Fuck off Bruce" responses? It's an incredibly benign quote from him - albeit accentuating the positive viewpoint. Too many on here would start a Fuck off Bruce thread if he happened to smile at them on the street.

If you utter any dissent some happy clapper tosser will jump down your throat at the match and scream "Shut the fuck up and support the team". SAFC fans as a whole tolerate utter f***ing shite on the field on the play, always have done as long as Ive supported up.

Bruce has the cheek to criticise Blatter for speaking before thinking

Bruce
"Benty" is my man - fucks off within the week
Gyan is going nowhere - fucks off within 24 hours
Bramble - sends Anton to QPR as he could rely on Bramble - on a sex pest charge within the week
Ji - had to travel 11,000 miles (c3,500 miles each way)

Bruce is a total arsehole - a total wanker - a total liability
