Bruce calls for calm but says Sunderland must beat Wigan to get season going

Steve Bruce has appealed for calm from Sunderland fans, but accepts his side must beat Wigan at home next week.

Sunderland have yet to record a victory at the Stadium of Light this season and Mark Schwarzer and the woodwork denied them win over Fulham, who also had their chances to settle an uninspired match.

There were the first muted shouts of `Bruce Out’ as Sunderland struggled against a side who have won only once in six games on their travels.

But with Wigan and Blackburn next on Wearside, in between a visit to Wolves, the unrest could grow.

Bruce said: `We’ll just have to make sure we beat Wigan or try our best to beat Wigan and move on.

'I think the season’s just about to start. I know we’ve played 12 games but we’ve got something like 10/ 12 games in the next seven weeks, which will define our season.

'We hope that we can still improve. I still think there have been improvements – certainly defensively we’re far, far better than we’ve ever been. We’ve just got to find that little bit up front that makes the difference

'We need a bit of patience. There’s an expectation and a pressure. They come in their thousands which creates the pressure. Let’s make no mistake: there’s more pressure here than at a Bolton or a Blackburn or a Fulham or a Wigan because the support we have is quite unique. It’s fantastic. And it’s up to us to give them something to shout about at home.’

Defender Phil Bardsley added: 'Everyone gets a bit carried away don’t they? They think we are going to win leagues and stuff with eight or nine new players but it ain’t gonna happen.

'We need a little bit of patience. People think these teams will just come and roll over but they have top players in their teams.'

Bruce has the cheek to criticise Blatter for speaking before thinking

Bruce
"Benty" is my man - fucks off within the week
Gyan is going nowhere - fucks off within 24 hours
Bramble - sends Anton to QPR as he could rely on Bramble - on a sex pest charge within the week
Ji - had to travel 11,000 miles (c3,500 miles each way)

Bruce is a total arsehole - a total wanker - a total liability

We come in our thousands and it creates pressure

Don't worry steve. Either way you won't have to put up with it for long

Bardo can sod off too. Clearly a get the player of the season to try and calm the fans before i get the bullet tactic

fans fault for not being shite like wigan and bolton

he will get his wish in a few weeks

Bardsley's comments are very interesting IMHO.

Mainly because if Bruce came out with that absolute bollocks, he'd be slated and people would use this "having a go at the fans" as a reason for him to be sacked...

I wonder if Bardsley's "passion" and that fact that he's never supported Newcastle will save him from being slated?

To be fair, if we were to push on then below average plodders like Bardsley would be out of their depth and peddled sooner or later.

It still makes him sound like a bell-end though.

Bardsley's comments are interesting in that they make him sound thick as fuck.

I'd be f***ing amazed if there's a single SAFC fan on the planet who 'thinks we're going to win leagues and stuff' within the next half a f***ing century, nevermind while he's playing for us.

Exactly. In fact, while players as dross as him are regulars in our team we will be looking down rather than up and that's part of the problem.

He should be thanking his lucky stars our standards are so low, it won him a player of the year award.

Top 10 was our target and I even said 12th wouldn't be too bad considering losing Henderson, bent, gyan and Gordon for a long period. 12th is more than reasonable and achievable target but we don't even look like getting that

Bardsley can fuck off aswell, hopefully your in the bench next week anyway

I'm f***ing sick of hearing 'the next X games will define our season', not just from Bruce but from people/pundits/poster on here. Every game is part of defining our season you f***ing muppet, no matter how well/poorly we do in the next few games it'll be no more important than what's gone before. We've been shocking, and he can't just keeping kicking the 'start our season' can down the road

Bardsley can get to fuck as well, if the players aren't even acknowledging how poor this start has been then we'll be in big trouble when they eventually hit what they believe is bad form.

Fuck sake, it seems everyone in our club is clueless.

At least he thinks it's about to start. At least now I can say I've been to pre-season games.

Who are these Sunderland fans who thought we were going to win the league? I'll admit that I expected better than the absolute shite served up thus far.....

It seems the players are believing the Bruce hype about expectations!

Defender Phil Bardsley added: 'Everyone gets a bit carried away don’t they? They think we are going to win league games and stuff with eight or nine new players but it ain’t gonna happen.

Tidied for you there Phil.

Don't beat Wigan, or more importantly, pick the same negative side and I'll be calling for Bruce to go.
