"After twice being pegged back by the Toffees in their last match"

Eh? must have been a different game

Welbeck is Manchester United's Waghorn. A player that may or may not end up being good enough for the first team squad, will probably never be good enough to walk straight into the first team, and is one that they really don't have the time to find out about.

They also have limited money to purchase top class stars, which they desperately need at the moment.

My gut feel?

There is a good chance that they will sell him for £7-8m in the summer, add that to the £15-20m they get for Berbatov, and bring in a top class striker. Just like we did by selling Waghorn and adding the money to the Jones fee to bring in Gyan.

I dont understand some who say it was a pointless signing because we just improving a player for Man Utd.

What about his contribution?
What about the fact he's helping us on our journey to becoming an established top 10 club?
What if Man Utd do decide to sell him? (just because he's had a couple of good games doesnt mean he's going to be the next big thing they have Machida and Hernadez)
Signing Wellbeck on Loan allowed us to sell Waghorn and Jones to raise funds for Gyan

There has to be the potential for Man Utd to benifit from loaning us the player otherwise why would they bother in the first pace?

Either it increases his selling price and puts him in the shop window if they dont want him or allows the player to gain vauluable experience and goes back a better player.

I think we have another Jonny Evans situation here, thats why I'm not sure why we took him on loan in the first place. All we've done in the long term is improve a Man Utd youngster for Man Utd

and in the short term got ourselves a cracking player on the cheap.

with bent and gyan not consistently fit, campbell out, noble out and healy on loan who would you have played?

Man Utd's finances are weird at the moment, they can't work them out so we have no chance ......... I don't think Bruce expected to play Welbeck as much as he has but injuries to Bent, Gyan and Campbell has changed things.

I'd imagine Bruce was looking for cover, and a season long look at the lad prior to a bid, rather than having the lad starring in the Premier League. Too bad but just one of them things.

I'm gonna give the lunatic the benefit of the doubt here and suggest that maybe with Welbeck being a young English prospect, with a good touch and now apparently goalscoring ability, his price could very well sky rocket.

aye, wouldnt it be shite if welbeck kept up this current trend of form and played excellent until the end of hte season, scoring a wedge of goals anarl all ill bet. the kernt

I suppose you can twist this around to fit your opinion as much as you like.
On the one hand when he has been played in his favoured position he has scored goals, which I am more than happy with.
On the other hand Fergie isn't an idiot, he will see what he is currently doing and either want him back, inflate the fee OR perhaps having bought Hernandez in the summer will be prepared to sell him come May.
My belief is this kid is a good prospect, maybe just not a top 4 player. At the same time though paying Gyan money would be crazy, I wouldn't pay more than £8 millon for him.
Having said that I hope that SAFC have got first refusal should they decide to sell him.

There is some mixed logic in this thread. We have signed a player for a season ok on loan, but he is our player for this year he is part of the squad and the manager has to pick the best 11. He gives the manager options and has made a great contribution which lest we forget in stating we are 'only improving Man Utd players' means he has helped us to 7th in the table and 20 points.

He's played well for three games, max (half against City, half against Spurs, last two games), he's unproven and has shown nothing like 7 million worth of player.

Also, with Campbell to come back, and with Gyan and Bent, we're not exactly toiling away with a poor strike force. Money spent on him could be spent on a decent midfielder instead which would be vastly more beneficial to the team, as midfield is a glaring weakness.

I agree with that, a pacy creative winger would push us forward in a big way IMO.

I'd say we have more of a need for a commanding CM. Zenden is fine in that role but he won't be playing for much longer you wouldn't have thought, so unless Riveros is blooded in and proves a sensation we will be lacking there.

I see Hendo as a RM, he lacks something to be a cm, maybe just the bulk, but he can't a run a game or even dictate the pace which is essential for a good team. Catts is more of a holding midfielder but he does a job there. What that does mean though is you need a playmaker or at least solid all rounder alongside him, and Henderson isn't that, yet at least.
