DANNY WELBECK will not rule out a permanent move to Sunderland - but boss Steve Bruce admits his dazzling form has created a Catch-22 situation.

The Manchester United forward, who is on a season-long loan, scored twice on Monday against Everton to take his goal tally to three in two games.

But with the England Under- 21 ace starting to catch the eye, Black Cats boss Bruce fears a full-time £7million switch for Welbeck is getting further away.

Bruce is desperate to strike a permanent deal for Welbeck, who celebrates his 20th birthday on Friday, and £6m-rated defender Nedum Onuoha, who is on loan from Manchester City.

Welbeck, who also scored in the 3-0 win at Chelsea, could fire his way back into Alex Ferguson's plans at Old Trafford.

But Bruce plans more talks with his old United boss Fergie over the youngster's future. He said: "Danny's a young lad and he's thriving on the challenge here. If he keeps playing like that, his price-tag will go up and put us in an impossible situation.

"We'd love him to stay, but how much will it cost now to buy him?

"The form he's showing now is why we brought him to the club. His ability has never been in question.

"The kid wants to play regularly, he's getting that with us and he's showing what a naturally gifted player he is."

Welbeck himself has left the door open to a permanent move to Wearside.

He revealed: "I've seen what Steve Bruce has said and I need to make a decision on my future.

"For now, I'm looking short-term. I just want to do my best in every game and I'm not thinking about whether I go back to United.

"My aim was to come here and get minutes on the pitch.

"At United, I was getting the odd chance here and there but I was never ready to take them.

"I'd miss loads of games and then I'd be thrown in and would struggle to do myself justice.

"It's different here. I'm playing every game and I'm getting better and better. You can see I am benefiting from it.

"I'm confident and I'm really enjoying my football."

Darren Bent and £13.4m record signing Asamoah Gyan have scored 11 of Sunderland's 17 league goals.

And after being used out on the wing, Welbeck is thriving in his preferred role up front.

He added: "We've relied too heavily on Bent and Gyan, so it's nice to finally contribute.

"It's taken me a bit of time but that's three in two and I've got to be happy with that.

"We're a great, hungry, young team who just want to go as far in the game as we can.

"The manager has had a massive influence on me. He's shown a lot of faith and I owe him a lot of thanks.

"I'm learning my trade. I'm still developing. This experience is good for me and can only help."

After twice being pegged back by the Toffees in their last match Sunderland manager Bruce has challenged his players to adopt a more ruthless approach.

The Black Cats are in seventh place and Bruce admitted: "This club in its history hasn't been able to deal with expectation.

"We have now got back-to-back games against Wolves and West Ham - teams at the wrong end of the Premier League.

"We have played now, with 14 games gone, the top 10 of last year and haven't been beaten by any of them.

"I think we have made progress - but we will keep plodding along."

Stop talking about him, stop bigging up his price on their behalf, just get on with it and let us know what happened and why afterwards. Or not.

Wait and see what he's done by the end of the season then think about it, We do have Campbell to rely on eventually.

Agree with this, as good as the lads been in the last few games lets not forget players that have done tha tin the past and failed to carry it over a season. Lets see where we all stand when his loan runs out and if we want him and if utd will sell.

would love to secure welbeck and onouha
some cracking youngsters who'd already be settled
try get them 2 tied down in january and we will manage without bringing anyone else in :)

I honestly find all of this a bit strange. If Welbeck was a S'land player he would be being linked extensively in the press with a move to Man Utd. Everyone would be saying that he is just the type of player Fergie likes (especially with the new UEFA rules coming in) and that they will make a move for him in Jan or the summer.

Assuming he keeps playing well, there is ZERO chance of us signing him. He will be at Utd next season.

End of (I think the saying is!)

Big problems here

We may have got away with buying him after the Chelsea performance if Man Utd thought it was a one off. Now, there's not a chance at all Fergie will want to sell him, especially as he knows Bruce is interested

I think we have another Jonny Evans situation here, thats why I'm not sure why we took him on loan in the first place. All we've done in the long term is improve a Man Utd youngster for Man Utd

Oh please. Campbell isnt fit to wipe his boots man.
He's very plucky and runs fast mind

I still think if he stays at Man Utd he's behind Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez and Macheda. Not great for his development.

TSL, motto
Every silver lining has a cloud.
Hey maybe we should have stuck with Waghorn. There's nobhead logic for you

... and benefited from his improvement, goals and performances. Isn't one worth the other?

Dont be f***ing ridiculous.....based on 2 games

I'm gonna give the lunatic the benefit of the doubt here and suggest that maybe with Welbeck being a young English prospect, with a good touch and now apparently goalscoring ability, his price could very well sky rocket.

If he maintains that form over the coming months then, yes his value will rocket. That all depends on where Bruce plays him when both of the other 2 'main' strikers are fit. But nased on what we have seen over the course of the season to date he wouldnt fetch more than we paid for Gyan

With Campbell out it is just as well we did sign him. Currently we have Bent, Gyan and Welbeck who can all do a good job for us this season. Without Welbeck it would be Bent, Gyan and probably Waghorn (when Campbell is out) who we presumably wouldnt have sold, or we would have needed to buy another striker. We wouldnt have had much to spend on a striker having already spent big on Gyan, so would have been left with a £5m or so striker (which gets you very little nowadays). It was either that or loan someone. We have opted to loan a player so that we dont need to think about buying another striker until next year and the lad we have brought in on loan looks like he can make a very positive contribution to us this season whilst he's here, probably more of a contribution than a player we could have signed

I agree about "just improving a youngster" when teams take a player who really isnt ready for the prem. They give him a season where he isnt all that effective and he then goes back a better player to his parent club, but if he is already good enough for our team, just not good enough for Manchester United, then I dont have a problem with it. We were linked with Tom Cleverley and was glad he didnt come because, imo, he is that kind of player who wouldnt yet be better than our other squad options, but Welbeck is better than the likes of Waghorn (comfortably) so i think it was worthwhile

Yep, on the one hand it seems pointless, but on the other if his goals and all around contribution gets us another 3-4 places come the end of the season, then its been good business.
