Bruce - Bardsley first choice left back

Balls to this "modern fullback" myth.

We're not a Champions League team and we need our defenders to first and foremost be able to defend - Bardsley might not be brilliant going forward (not that I think he's as hopeless at it as some like to make out) but he's a very good defender.

When we were 6th and flying pre-xmas it wasn't because we were scoring for fun and our fullbacks were flying up and down like Ashley Cole and Dani Alves, it was because we were keeping clean sheets. Give me a good defender anytime.

He's not bad going forward but we'd be a better side if we had natural balance, its common sense.

I'd be more than happy with Bardsley at right back.

So if he were doing the exact same job atleft back that he is doing now, but happened to be left footed, you'd be happy for him to play there?

I'm sure it's been covered on here before, but being left footed is not a pre-requisite for a left back.

He's not a very good defender though, especially when showing players down the line on the left hand side (ie his weaker side). This was shown last season when two out and out wingers in Jarvis and Phillips gave him a torrid time.

Give me a good, attacking dynamic fullback anytime.

He isnt. He is good at sliding tackles. Thats it. He was at fault for alot of goals last season because he was out of position and he isnt quick enough to make for it.

IMHO, Richardson would be at fault for fewer goals if played at left back, than Bardsley would be if played at left back.

It kind of is in all honesty.

I won't be as gutted as some people if he is our LB next season, but I would prefer an actual left back at left back, rather than a right back/centre back/centre mid/attacking mid

Horseshit of the highest order.

Imo, of course.

How's that?

Nahhhh, what about Lahm mate?! He's right footed isnt he?! Lets ignore the fact that he's about 10x the player Bardsley will ever be, he's right footed and Bardsley is right footed.

Lets stick Elmo left wing. Downing is left footed but has played well on the right before. That means Elmo can play on the left.

In fact, why the fuck do we bother with positions? Lets just send a keeper out with 10 players and tell them to roam about the place - there'll be examples of players playing in lots of different positions successfully.

You dont understand defending then, unfortunately.

Watch the goals we conceded towards the back end of last season. Watch Bardsleys involvement.

How's that?
Because as we saw last season it creates a massive imbalance in the team.

I've got nothing against Bardsley but he will never be a left back in a million years purely based on the fact he has no left foot and hence it means he gets skinned on the outside way too often.

Don't be a tit - if you can't see that Bardsley did a perfectly good job for us at left back last season then you're either wilfully blinkered or you simply don't know what you're talking about.

It's got fuck all to do with Philip Lahm or any of the other top left backs who are/were right footed - it's all about recognising that he can do the job and has done the job in the past.

Phillip Bardsley is a decent footballer, he isnt Ashley Cole or Patrice Evra but were not Chelsea or Man Utd. Some people need to be realistic, I would love to sign a natural left back, but only if they are going to give us more than Bardo.

Some people need to have a word like

Based on his ability and complete lack of left foot I don't think anyone can argue that he did the best he could but is that good enough for us to push on in the coming seasons? Not for me.

Sometimes I think our fans like being stuck in the world of mediocrity, and people describing Bardsley's season as 'class' because he scored a couple of goals is testament to that.

Didnt Danny Collins win that once?
Twice actually.

A natural left back will give us something Bardsley can't, balance.

We need to be realistic? to expect us to sign a player in a position we're short in
