Bruce - Bardsley first choice left back

Has the potential? He's 26.

The role of the full-back has changed over the years, they must be able to get forward and support in attack as well as defend.

Bardo isn't particularly great at either. He has his moments.

 FFS - you're telling me that - I've been saying that for yonks (and I play attacking RB mesell, btw).

Bardo has grown as a player, partly due to his enhanced conditioning, but he couldn't really show how far he'd come at LB (for the many well-discussed reasons). If his growth continues it may have a place in his natural position - RB. Certainly, he will read the angles better and control the wingers better on the outside on his strong side. I have my doubts about him there too, but there's a chance (there is no chance at LB).

I'v seen him get to the byline the odd time down the left and whip in a cross so it is in him to do it... had we a better left winger then he would have more of an outlet to pass to the byline when he does get forward too...yeah he cuts inside often but this isn't ALWAYS a bad thing either..

Just to point a few things out.....

Downing is left footed but he was played on the right last season as it offered the dimension of cutting inside and having shots.... N'Zogbia was played on the opposite flank as well for this exact reason ( goal against arsenal )..... yes they wouldn't get to the byline on these sides of the pitch but they offered something different... these are just two examples but it happens LOADS of the time by managers of the highest caliber....

Anyway as i said earlier maybe with better players around Bardo he could pass on to an available winger down the left or something....maybe this seaon he's have that in whoever plays there? He wasn't well supported down the left last season lets be honest!

.... we've made a lot of changes and sometimes too many can be dangerous to make too many. Bardo was solid last year chipping in with 3 goals and 2 assists and was always looking to push the team out of our half when under pressure. I certainly wouldn't be annoyed to see him there next seaon. If Bruce signs someone better then grand but if not then that's completly fine by me too cos for a lot of last season ( before a dip before the end ) he was first name on the team sheet...in that position too.

Still would rather a recognised striker first.

Some of the comments on here are embarrassing and sum up the deluded nature of a lot of our and newcastles fans.

Massive difference between a winger playing on the opposite side of their stronger foot and a fullback, and those players are generally allowed the freedom to roam inside by having an overlapping fullback.

Having a left footed winger just so Bardsley could cut inside and balloon a shot over the bar would be a waste.

Bardo has the potential to be a solid, if unspectacular, RB.

Whilst you're right, therein lies the problem.

He has the potential (even though he's not a youngster) to be an unspectacular right back, and that's about it. He'll never be a long term solution to our left back problem, and whilst I quite like him as a player, if we're to have aspirations of consistently finishing in the top half we need to be looking at full backs a level higher than Phil Bardsley.

There hasn't been much mention of Figueroa this summer. Usually we are linked with a move for him and N'Zogbia. I would love to see both sign, plus Hutton and a new striker, to add to what we have.

Figueroa is absolute dogshit mate.

Missing the point a little bit...... having a left footed winger would be to PREVENT bardo having to cut inside and shoot....would give him an outlet/ other option

He is an unstoppable attacking force man. Cuts inside, shoots, scores. FACT.

Its strange that he only decided to do it once or twice like - but he can do it whenever he likes. Especially when he cuts inside and shoots. He always scores then.

Our tactics next season should be "give Phil the ball, then he can cut inside, shoot and score" - we'll win every game by the number of goals he decides he's going to score.

Cuts inside, shoots, scores. Every time. What a legend.

BUMP

Sounds like a plan ... let's PREVENT him from cutting inside and shooting.

p.s - Anyone know who scored the first against York?
