Bruce - Bardsley first choice left back

His weaknesses at left back are glaringly obvious. He struggles to cope when attacked on his left side and he has to cut inside when attacking, and his delivery suffers immensely as a result.

Cuts inside...shoots...scores. What's the problem?

I thought he had it figured on the last game of the season where he played Bardsley in his correct position and shifted Colback to LB for some balance.

If he's gone back on this (and it's still just an if) then I would doubt his tactical nous even more than I do now.

As I said in the other thread marra, best to resist making any judgements just now but I completely agree.

Do you only remember his goals and putting some effort in but have forgotten him being woefully inadequate and being at fault for a large number of goals conceded?

Exactly. Because he scored a couple of goals (3?) people have forgotten all about his failings as a defender. I remember him being at fault a lot last season and purposely voted Bramble as my player of the season as I felt it was a joke if Bardo won it. He won it by default to be fair, yes he showed improvement but not enough improvement to suggest he is anything more than a good squad player. He's not a left back that's for sure.

Don't let one or two goals cloud your judgement.

He is an unstoppable attacking force man. Cuts inside, shoots, scores. FACT.

Its strange that he only decided to do it once or twice like - but he can do it whenever he likes. Especially when he cuts inside and shoots. He always scores then.

Our tactics next season should be "give Phil the ball, then he can cut inside, shoot and score" - we'll win every game by the number of goals he decides he's going to score.

Cuts inside, shoots, scores. Every time. What a legend.

Na I remember him being a very solid defender who chipped in with a couple of great goals.

Hope he is first choice lb next season he deserves it.

Very solid? He was a liabilty who cost us more goals than any other player, if he had a lazy, uncaring attitude to go along with his ability he'd be absolutely hated but he rolls his sleeves up and tries, so let's reward mediocrity with the player of the year award.

I honestly can't think of another player who would be directly responsible for 3 goals by the opposition captain in the derby and not only does he get away with it but people have the nerve to say he was the only one to come out of those games with any credit, bizarre. If Elmo had made those same basic errors against Newcastle he'd have been lynched.

Apart from Bardsley being a ball watcher and never knowing where his man is, he is a committed defender!
I'm not that arsed thats he is a right footed fullback its more to do with the balance of the team. If he had a winger on the left who hugged the touchline then having Bardsley cutting in would not be that much of an issue.
But as it stands we have a left back and left midfielder both cutting inside.
Full credit to the lad for raising his game last season when it looked like he was going to be released, but he is only a squad player.
Bruce has also acknowledged on occasions that he is as fault for goals, so I don't think he is first choice.

Aye he was very solid. Fair enough he had a couple of bad games but he still deserved his player of the year award. And players' player of the year award

It's a fact, in the absence of a specialist LB, Bardo is our No1 LB.

There is an argument for Richadson as an attacking wing back but defensively Bardo is the only option. Some of the new signing could possibly cover LB but I wouldn't see any of them as a long term opition.
