Sunderland stormed to a memorable 4-0 success at Sheffield United on this day 24 years ago.
Michael Bridges turned in a magnificent performance and scored twice, while also missing a penalty, to destroy veteran Blades defender Steve Bruce, who decided to quit playing shortly after being given the runaround by Peter Reid’s lively Red and Whites. Niall Quinn also notched a Bramall Lane double to delight the big travelling support in a crowd of 25,612.
Gavin McCann made his debut as a late sub for Kevin Ball.

Leaders Sunderland regained winning ways after two Third Division draws in succession on this day 35 years ago, with Eric Gates and a John MacPhail penalty sinking hard-working Port Vale 2-1 at Roker Park.

Sunderland stayed eighth in the Premier League despite losing 1-0 at Wigan on this day 13 years ago.
Hugo Rodallega capitalised on poor defending to bag the only goal on 76 minutes as Wigan bounced back from their nine-goal thrashing at Spurs the week before.
