At least they had a romatic tale of seafaring ..... you just have a parody of lung disease

In the 70's travelling from Wakey, if there were no trains ( or I was skint) I caught the bus to Easington Village ( from Leeds !) which went via the boro. I swear that we went over a bridge (Tees?) & the river was fucken orange :(

I thought so too. But they were doing it to everyone. I wouldn't have been bothered but I had to use it at Uni the next day. The fuckers. I had to wear a nashy one
I had a similar experience with an NCB donkey jacket back in the day, Farquhars made me turn it inside out or they were going to nick me for stealing it. Miserable buggers Cleveland coppers.

Wankers man. It wouldn't be difficult to put one football special on after the match direct to Sunderland.

I remember one place, Carlisle I think, when this train just appeared.... "Non stop to Sunderland" was shouted out by the staff & polis. No timetable or owt, "just get them out of here" was the cry.
2 things, it can be done when it suits & it didn't make my wait for the Leeds train fun :(

Friendly about 10 years back?

At least they let you turn it inside out mate. I had to freeze me bollocks off. Didn't help we got beat 2 nowt either. I vowed never to return to that wasteland of a ground.

I don't get this at all. The Smoggy thing has been part of our identity for years now. We buy t shirts and badges with proud to be a Smoggy on them. Our own away support often has people amongst them with the white chemical suit and masks on. Cant see why they would be so offended if your lot wore them.
When we played you last in the cup game, a few of us got the train down about 2pm and drank in the Wetherspoons next to the station and in the town centre (Yates, etc). Few lads were a bit edgy in Spoons but everyone else seemed sound, knew where we were from and were happy to mingle. This was when you's were absolutely shit in the Championship though and there wasn't really much of a buzz in the town before the game, what do you reckon it'll be like this time? Will be getting the train down but don't want to get stuck in with the majority in the escort

There's very little trouble these days at the ground or in town. Think even the local hoolies can't muster any enthusiasm these days.

Boro supporter here.

Northumbria Police relaxed some of the previous restrictions around the Sunderland v Boro match earlier this season and (apart from some limited trouble in one pub) it generally went well.

Unfortunately Cleveland Police who are still in the dark ages are still applying draconian measures on travelling Sunderland supporters which comes as no surprise. Hostility breeds hostility. Treat people with respect and generally you get respect back.

There will be an over the top police presence, use of drones (as at some other matches this season), the police helicopter and Sunderland fans will be kept back after the match. As for preventing fans wearing what they want ... you couldn't make it up. Totally unnecessary and over the top.

I'm struggling to think of a Tees / Wear derby with less at stake.

If you are travelling by train and wanting a drink you will probably be "directed" to Spensleys Emporium close to the station. If you prefer to retain your liberty you would be better off getting off at nearby Thornaby station and getting a taxi to Boro.

The coaches / minibuses in the escort will be parked within 30 yards of the away turnstiles. Don't believe the bulls**t about coaches / minibuses travelling after the official leave time of 5.30 p.m. ... those vehicles will also be parked in the same location.

Your fans will be fine as long as they aren't being idiots which applies to away fans at most matches / towns up and down the country.

See you in The Championship next season ... in the meantime enjoy your trip to God's country.

UTB!
