Bob Murray

I read an article in the Telegraph a few years ago Tom Cowie reckoned there were two things that should never have left Southampton, the Titanic and Lawrie Mcmenemy.
If I remember right he blames Barry Batey for causing everything to fuck up, what ever the ins and outs of things were it wasn't Batey or his consortium who stepped in it was Murray and all credit to him.

At the time i wasn't a fan of Murray at all, i even took part in the red card protests. Lookin back i can see he had the club's best interest at heart but unfortunately not the money and bottle to back it up. I was young and dafter then tho.

I thank him for getting Quinn involved, that worked out quite nice. :-D

You believe he sought out Quinn. Get fucked man,,,

its a real shame that a lack of talent is used as a reason to hate someone.

spend half his wealth, are you taking the mick, bank of England club was relegated and largely due to ungrateful fans who feel it is his duty to sacrifice so much after working his way up from nothing.

he made countless errors, yet he still delivered the most successful time for what 40 years?

Not and sort out a new stadium he didn't.
Perhaps people like myself wish he'd gone down the other route, but that's a selfish attitude and I suppose a new ground was necessary.

Let's be honest about this, if we didn't have the SoL and were playing in a refurbished all-seater Roker Park with a capacity of about 25k - 30k, do you think anyone in the country would still think of us as a 'big club' including ourselves ? Do you think anyone would expect MoN or any really good players would want to come here ? We would morph into the Fulham / West ham of the North and hopefully be a pleasant medium sized club that would make up the numbers in the big league.

When BM built the SoL, there were PLENTY of people (both SAFC fans and outsiders) who thought he was building a white elephant as the days of SAFC being well supported were well gone (remember, we failed to sell out Roker Partk (capacity 22k) that often during our first year in the Premier League). Without BM's vision and leadership, we would have never again had the potential to be at the top table.

We aren't there yet, but we now have the right blend of people and facilities to build up and challenge for it over the next five years and beyond. That is BM's true legacy.

The bad side of BM; obviously he made a bad decision by being loyal to Reidy and giving him the cash/time when he'd lost the plot and compounded this mistake by making an horrific appointment (with hindsight - Wilko) which blew up in his face and gave us the 19 points season. These two decisions cost him everything at SAFC and persuaded him it was time to go.

The 15 points season was all Mad Mick's own work, as his subsequent record at Wolves has shown where he behaved VERY differently when promoted and given a similar amount of cash to spend. Pity he had to learn the hard way using us as the guinea pig.

No he didn't lad.
Niall phoned him and Murray took up the offer of help

Not according to Niall. Perhaps he was lying but he said at one of the talk-ins that Murray first suggested he should get some of his mates together to form a consortium, he then bent over backwards to help get the deal done and at a very reasonable price.

Whilst the price was reasonable, he received about 3 times the value per share he offered other shareholders a year or so earlier. I believe he was obliged to offer all shareholders this price due to PLC rules though.

You lot who slag murray off haven't got a f***ing clue about the clubs history.
It was Cowie who appointed Mcmenemy and it was him who walked away and left the club in the shit.
Cowie was never a Sunderland fan, Murray is! He pulled the club out of the shite but he was never rich enough to provide the major surgery needed on and off the pitch.
He left a canny legacy and unlike Hall up the road sold the club to someone who had it's best interests at heart.
Bob Murray is a Sunderland fan and as such deserves our respect, some of the shit that's spouted about him on here is f***ing disgraceful.

He was.

Oh but he did my angry and agressive friend.

No Quinn came to him with an offer he was never going to refuse. Ive said all that needs to be said on my previous post in this thread that as yet no one has had an answer for.

Bob must have use of a private box at the SOL, as I have never seen him in the directors box.

Quinn asked if there was anything he could do to help, Bob suggested what i said previously.

Point is, I'm sure he could have sold to other, less suitable, consortiums along the way.

But he agreed to sell to Drumaville and the rest is recent history.

Absolute made up nonsense. The club was in such a state that we were virtually worthless. There was no other offers unless you could enlighten me to who they were from. As I've already said. He tried to sell to Cowie man but he wouldn't put the money up,

He was hardly and ever present as chairman, I doubt he'll go all that often these days. Mind, he'll not be the only exile not to go on a regular basis.

Fickling is always there though, he's always been a big Sunderland supporter though.

Bob Murray said he had the chance to sell to another interested party but turned it down for the good of the club. You can choose whether to believe that or not though.

Again great of Bob to say to Quinny "go and get your rich mates together and give me money to get me out of this hell hole I've created for myself" Top man.

I think you know what my choice is.

Sir Bob attends most home games, not all.

John Fickling is a top man and still very passionate about all things SAFC. I know Quinn invited John back to the board as a non executive director a short while ago but he turned the offer down stating he just wanted to support the club he loved.
