Regardless of your opinion on Sir Bob, we wouldn't be where we are without him.

No Peter Reid No Howard Wilkinson/Buxton/Butcher
No Stadium/Academy of Light Wanted it at Nissan
No two 7th place finishes 5 relegations
No Niall Quinn
No hot youth prospects Anyone for tenuous?
No Roy Keane Nowt to do with him
No derby home win Nowt to do with him
No Steve Bruce Nowt to do with him
No Bent, Sessegnon, Gordon etc Nowt to do with him
No 10th placed finish As above
No Martin O'Neill as above

Sorry mate, I do respect you as a long term fan but your post in nonsense.

Towards the end it was right for him to leave but I'm so thankful for him for the SoL, the academy, etc. Heart was in the right place.

What the poster means is that Bob Murray was linked all along, because he was a chain reaction at the club.

He lifted our club, and lifted us onto a platform, which then gave us the opportunity to compete to sign great players and managers, such as MON. So really if he had never been here we could have sunk into oblivion, and all these chain of events may never have took place.

Thank god for Lawrie Mac, without him, there would be no Martin O'Neill. Without Lawrie Mac, we might never have gone down to Division 3, Dennis Smith wouldn't have come to town with Marco, Gates would be seen as a failed overhyped signing. No play off win over the mags, no promotion - no way for our fans to make an impression on Reid and Quinn when relegated in from of 10,000+ supporters.....

No Malcom Crosby, no 92 cup final. No Butcher and his cheer leading, no man in the hat, no Reid, no Quinn etc etc

All praise Lawrie Mac!

You lot who slag murray off haven't got a f***ing clue about the clubs history.
It was Cowie who appointed Mcmenemy and it was him who walked away and left the club in the shit.
Cowie was never a Sunderland fan, Murray is! He pulled the club out of the shite but he was never rich enough to provide the major surgery needed on and off the pitch.
He left a canny legacy and unlike Hall up the road sold the club to someone who had it's best interests at heart.
Bob Murray is a Sunderland fan and as such deserves our respect, some of the shit that's spouted about him on here is f***ing disgraceful.

I dount anyone is saying Cowie isn't a twat like.

There is a touch of selective memory going on, on both sides of the argument to be fair.

He made mistakes, big ones, but I still can't bring myself to dislike the bloke.

If Murray hadn't stepped in when Cowie shit on us the club could have gone under.
He was far from perfect as a chairman but he did his best and he loves the club.

What some people seem to forget about Murray, for all he wasn't mega rich, like Abramovich etc, he had enough money to ensure Sunderland could establish ourselves as a top flight club.

If he wanted to, he could have bankrolled the club to succesive top half finishe before money really came into the game - who knows where that would have left us.

He didn't want to, fair enough it was his money and he preferred to spend it elsewhere. I know what I would have done, if I was in the same position though.

I totally agree with you. Murray did the best he could for Sunderland. If you cut him in half, he would be Red and White in the middle like a stick of rock

Perhaps.

He was far from perfect as a chairman .

Agreed

He was far from perfect as a chairman but he did his best and he loves the club.

Not so sure about that, especially not in his earlier days as chairman.

Not and sort out a new stadium he didn't.
Perhaps people like myself wish he'd gone down the other route, but that's a selfish attitude and I suppose a new ground was necessary.

Nah, he could have spent his vast fortune on ensuring we were a top flight team for years before his fortune became insignificant.

Up to him though, he didn't do his best though, totally his choice though, he worked hard for his money, if he didn't want to spend it on Sunderland AFC then that's his choice.

At the time i wasn't a fan of Murray at all, i even took part in the red card protests. Lookin back i can see he had the club's best interest at heart but unfortunately not the money and bottle to back it up. I was young and dafter then tho.

I thank him for getting Quinn involved, that worked out quite nice. :-D

I don't get what you mean here.

We could easily have had sustained top flight football at Roker Park for years if he had invested his personal fortune in the club - we could still have gone on to build the Stadium of Light - the two things aren't mutually exclusive.

I think most people acknowledge the great work Bob Murray did to arrange the Stadium of Light - it doesn't wipe out what came before - something he was in a position to change.

He did have the money though, before the Sky money made his money insignificant. If he had put £20 million of his personal fortune into Sunderland in the late 80's, who knows where would have been when the money came into football. I'd guess it would be a much better position than we were actually in, in 1992/3.

He didn't though, that's his choice, his hard earned money.

That would have been a canny wedge of his fortune like. I don't think he was "that" rich.

Yeah, I realise it would have been a significant amount to him and, especially in hindsight, I can appreciate why he didn't spend half his personal fortune on Sunderland AFC.

He could have chosen to though, he could have made a difference, I know, a lot of supporters who would like to think they would, if in that position.

Would you like? really!

I wouldn't and I love SAFC a hell of a lot

Well, to make a real difference now, I'd have to be worth billions. If I was worth billions, I'd do it for sure.

If football was in that same position as in the late 80's now, and £20 million could mean sustained top flight football - and I was worth £40 million. I'd do it for sure.
