Blue badges

It is not FREE everywhere to park, even with a badge.

Ignorance on the subject, blowing things out of proportion, but it's will be gladly read on here, by our resident posters

This will be ignored, but is absolutely correct.

Yet again, a thread to have a go at people at the bottom. We can all play, I seen someone do this and that, but that is not the whole story.

Some on here lap it up though. The actively spout this sort of stuff, to get a cheap rise out of genuine people.

They make me pity them, as by God, if anything slightly impacts them, the howls come long and loud.

To be honest I said most car parks are not free for Blue Badges to give some the benefit of the doubt that some may be free but in 20 years I have never encountered a car park that is free for Blue Badges even at hospitals. The car park I use the most is 50p for an hour and £1 for up to 2 hours. I always pay the £1 just in case there is a delay getting back to the car, although there never is, so I probably pay much more over the year than many tight arsed fuckers that like to moan about imaginary free parking for Blue Badges.

the most openly abused benefit around
Good Friday was sitting in the car outside of st Marys church waiting for wife who had run round to m and s
Yes I had paid for my ticket
of the 3 cars parked in the bay's and 4 cars parked in the loading bay and disabled bays there was only one person who looked anywhere near disabled an old guy trying to walk with sticks
One women got out of the car and ran across the road to avoid a bus coming down fawcett street
Everyone of them fraudsters
Most are using them as free parking and relying on people been too afraid or embarrassed to challenge them
Today in morrisons bloke and wife and kid who had obviously been walking on the beach dodged in front of me and all three climbed that small wall up into the car park and got into a car with blue badge being displayed
Government needs to think this one through again as it openly and blatantly abused

others with valid reasons for using blue badges should be doing their bit and challenging the fraudsters as they are giving the genuine users a bad name
I've got a blue badge, because I've got heart failure so I look absolutely fine, agree people abuse it but not everyone. Like most things now it's just not policed by the authorities

I have COPD and IHD (Ischaemic Heart Disease) and could probably qualify for a Blue Badge in my own name. Even then I have never used my wife's Blue Badge when she is not with me. In fact we don't keep it in my car, she keeps it in her hand bag, in case she needs a lift off my son in his car. I don't think people should abuse the Badge though.

I think it just depends on where you live and the rules of the council / car park owners.

I do know sunderland royal is free, if you register your car with them and display the blue badge. I am not sure if that is only for disabled parking bays. obviously where you live is different.

both sunderland and skunksville have rules that as long as you park in a recognised bay and display your badge, there is no need to pay the charge

In sunderland if you park in a permit zone and not using the badge to park on restricted, but displaying the badge, you can park there all day if you want.

if you use the badge to park on double yellows then the badge 3 hour limit applies.

as ive said before the real benefit for badge holders is the location of the parking bays

I think abuse should be clamped down on.

you should apply for a badge in your own right. sunderland council charge £10 I think and the interview is over the phone. badge lasts for 3 years IIRC

We go to Shrewsbury Hospital fairly often and they do charge if you have a Blue Badge but say you may be eligible for a full or partial reimbursement of travel costs which I expect applies even if you don't have a Blue Badge but are on certain benefits. The Badge does allow you to use disabled parking bays around the hospital. They use number plate recognition software and photograph your car when you enter hospital grounds. Then when you leave you type in your number at a terminal and it shows you the photograph to confirm when you arrived.

I think I will apply for a Blue Badge, I'm not going to get any younger. In Shropshire they charge £10 and it lasts for 3 years but you have to fill in a form that does ask a lot of health questions even if you are receiving the enhanced component of PIP, which I am not, so I may have to get something from my GP.

Sunderland does seem to offer some useful parking facilities.

Even in the council run car parks in Shropshire, I still have to pay.

Apply online , if needed you’ll be called for an assessment - I didn’t need to involve GP

If you are perfect fly able to walk back and forwards to your car from a proper car parking bay and round town shopping you don't need a blue badge for FREE parking
I see people parking down the bottom of grey street and walking up into Newcastle city centre and round the shops all days yet claiming they are disabled and need free parking
It doesn't have to be the driver it could be a family member who can't drive.

I’m not sure how it works but Macmillan just filled in the forms and sent them off for me dad, I have to be honest I’d not even have known he would be eligible for one if it wasn’t for them.

I’ve just done the application for my dad, it’s not a difficult process but they do need to “ask him some questions” next week so will see what that entails.

I wasn’t there when they did me dad’s but by all accounts it was very straightforward and a formality in terms of whether he’d get the badge or not. Same with an allowance that’s not means tested that he’s automatically entitled to (not sure which allowance it is) that he was awarded.

Quite right , last thing you need is loads of hassle when you have other priorities

Couldn’t agree more, what impressed me was that we’d never have known, but there was a direct referral from Macmillan to the DWP who have specialist people in me dad’s circumstances. Obviously I’d rather have never known about it, but we certainly couldn’t complain about how they helped.

take the questions quite literally. I don't know the disability but for me its mobility.

they will ask things

how far can you walk before pain.

that means how far can you walk before you feel the pain.

so it does, after 5 steps, immediately or after 20 yards say that.

It does not mean, how far do you walk, before it is so painful to make you stop or take a rest.

we know that if we need to walk 500 yards. we need to walk 500 yards or we fail to get there.

In my case it hurts immediately I start to walk.

How do you walk up stairs

tell them literally, one step at a time using the banister to me pull myself up.

How do you walk down the stairs, same again one step at a time and using the banister to control the careful walk down.

you are excluding those (on a very good wage admittedly) from the blue badge scheme
if you are a blue badge holder, its not about free parking, it is all about being near to an amenity in order to use it.
The fact a person has wealth has nothing to do with it.
apart from administration, it really does not cost the public purse anything.

I can park opposite Gillbridge for the match and I am in agony after the hobble over and afterwards the pain is incredible. I have had this issue for years so I am pretty pain tolerate, but it is sheer agony.

I can also park on the sheepfolds on double yellows. It hurts and after walking back it hurts again but the pain is just bearable but nowhere near as bad as if had walked the extra.

that has nothing to do with money, its not about money, its about being able to participate

Most blue badge holders will be in the same boat as me, or have an even worse disability. My heart goes out to them as their is nothing worse than being physically restrained from participating

Please show me where I've suggested that people who's disabilities qualify for a blue badge should be excluded from having one based on income?

I've stated that I agree with disabled parking provision as close to an entrance as possible. At no point have I said anybody who qualifies on a need basis shouldn't be issued with a blue badge, but if you can afford it you should pay for parking.

I don't know why, but you appear to be labouring on a mutually agreed point.

I've never suggested to exclude anyone from the Blue Badge Scheme, merely that those who can afford to pay, should. Especially for local authority ran off or on-street parking.

Aye, I sat through a PIP assessment with him a few years ago, he got rejected based on the fact he could physically make his own meals etc.

I tried to do the questions on his behalf but they wouldn’t allow it. He falls over when he stands up, Shane he doesn’t just bounce back up like one of those weebils.
