Blind people given sight.

OOOSH YEAH

Striker
So imagine a person of 20 that has been offered the chance to have an op that would give them their sight for the first time. Do you think they would take it?

I don’t think they’d be able to cope with it. You’d probably have built up a picture of what everything and everyone looks like. Say they’re walking along a busy road and a lorry comes along the road they’d f***ing shit themselves. The colours, the lights, it would be absolutely overwhelming for them.

Could be wrong mind.

Imagine typing 'porn' into google for the first time... I think they'd be fairly happy with the choice they've made.

It happens more than youd think. I'm only aware of one case where the blind individual asked for a reversal. Most of the time a completely blind individual as opposed to a legally blind individual has to learn things like
binocular perception, and that can take some time. But it's far from impossible.

Read up about it. It's fascinating what the brain does.

Really?

That’s exactly what I meant by a lorry passing on the road. You’d struggle to not think it was going to hit you or it’s really near. Must be very scary.

I wouldn’t really know where to start but it is something that interests me.

Have an amazon search for the psychology of perception. Obviously it depends on the persons level of sight before the operation (because blind isn't always what we think) and the level of sight 'restored' but yes it happens. The interesting part is how much the brain fills in from experiences and social context. We see upside down and mostly black and white for instance. So a good case study like the one described is fascinating - but they do exist. The depth perception issue is famous. One study (on which father ted was based) saw an Amazon native being taken out of the forrest for the first time and asking why the animals (which were far away) were so small. I have my doubts about that one personally but its a good example.

Interesting that like.

I’ve been reading bits about it like the question of if a person has their sight restored would they be able to identify shapes from sight alone. I’m going to read a lot more about it because it’s really interesting.

I don't know how you'd be able to build up a picture of what everything looked like if you'd never been able to see. You'd have zero concept of anything.

Incognito by David eagleman is a fascinating book on neuroscience and perception for the lay person. Th at is me, I don't do science much.
Me too. I’ll give that a look mate cheers.

Yeah that’s what I want to find out.

They'll have used their own imagination to fill in the gaps. Some parts of the real world would be disappointing to say the least.

Like the time I thought looking at nudes of Hope Solo was a good idea

Yeah that’s what I want to find out.

You have to learn what things are. If you have missed some development as a child then those pathways are cut off forever. However, perception is just what we have from our senses.A bloodhound has a smell 200 times more sensitive. We don't "miss" those smells because we have never smelled them.

You can learn to "see" if an image is projected on your back using a matrix of dots. The brain learns to interpret the dots.

The eye just processes the image that is in front of you, the brain learns to interpret that image in childhood. It is incredible really.

I don't think they are necessarily cut off from childhood, we can learn to process information. The concept at issue here is 'restored' sight (in that sight has been gifted to someone not previously able to see), so presumably the nural systems that process this information are still intact. Some concepts will be incredibly difficult but unless there are other issues sight will be combined with the other senses so they will never be going into sight completely devoid of experience.
