Blatter wants to scrap penalty shootouts

Have some sort of point system, like on boxing.

Points for possession, shots on target, area's of possession etc.

Only an idea like, but basically the team that tries to win the game wins rather than the team sitting back playing for the shootout.

What I like about this type of approach, like the penalty shootout before the game/ET idea, is that it would change the nature of the game entirely. Fewer teams would have the type of game plan Chelsea had against Barca or Bayern, so we might see more entertaining games.

On the other hand, it could be the death of underdog victories.

Are you Sepp Blatter?

Points for playing tippy tappy continental football. Would go down well with Barcelona I suppose.

Maybe possession in the final third, it was just an idea it would need some thinking about obviously.

I don't think it would mean the death of the underdog as most underdog victories (in FA cup etc) are not a result of a shoot out. This would only be an alternative to a shoot out. If the underdog choses to play negative tactics and nick a goal it still may work.

Anything of this sort will, possibly, alter the whole style of a match as teams set out to score the required "points" or whatever and therefore challenge the opposition to try and score.

The game would be a lot better is people like Blatter were in it. I hope he f*cks off...in fact, I wouldnt bat an eye lid if he crocked it.

It would be a fiasco, teams would play keep-ball in extra time.

You would rarely get underdog victories as they would automatically lose in the case of a draw, they would be forced to have a go and get raped as Oddball says.

Well it would be a risky strategy trying to just win on points, plus to do so the team would have to have the majority of possession, shots on target etc which would be difficult for a negative team going for the draw to do and if they did then they would deserve the victory? It would be upto the other team to be better and win.

Remember this would only be an alternative to a shoot out so wouldnt affect the majority of games.

could this **** be any more bitter about an english club winning his darling of football using 'negative' football? the only tragedy was bayerns inability to finish.

if barcelona had won after being humped sideways it would be proclaimed justice as barcelona play the best football or some shite like that.

how he's the president of anything is beyond me.

if they playing for a draw then yes, but if they confident they can soak up pressure and win on the break then they still have 90mins plus extra time to do it.

As I say it was just an idea it obviously has issues as do most solutions. That's the problem and the reason shoot out's are still the final decider in a game.

I personally don't mind the shoot out.

Although having them before the game like some suggested would surely create the same issues? teams playing for the draw even more so as they will win.

Sepp Blatter wants penalty shoot-out alternative

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs.

Beckenbauer is head of the Football Task Force 2014, a group designed to recommend rule changes.

"Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said.
"Football should not go to one to one. When it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence."

Just after an English team has won the Champions League on penalties, what a coincidence.

Anyone have any ideas for alternatives?

Sack Blatter and use him as a target in the penalty shootout. Whoever knocks out the most teeth wins. :-D

The possession side would not need to commit men forward, thereby creating the openings for the counterattacking side.

Each team selects 5 players and a keeper which can be changed. Take corner kicks. First team to score (subject to equal kicks having been taken) wins. Each corner kick ends when EITHER the defending team clears the ball outside its penalty area OR if the attacking team fails to deliver the ball directly into the penalty area.

Tournament disciplinary record could be used. Team with most yellow/red cards gets eliminated.
