Sepp Blatter wants penalty shoot-out alternative

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs.

Beckenbauer is head of the Football Task Force 2014, a group designed to recommend rule changes.

"Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said.
"Football should not go to one to one. When it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence."

Just after an English team has won the Champions League on penalties, what a coincidence.

Anyone have any ideas for alternatives?

After extra time keep taking one player off each team every five minutes, keep going until someone scores

Golden goal but take 1 player from each side off the pitch every 5/10mins, reduce it down to 5 men minimum, if after 3 hours still no goal, toss a coin

There really isnt any alternative. I like penalty shootouts- yes it can be a heartbreaking way to lose but it adds to the drama and excitement and for the neutral it can make a dull game a lot more interesting at the end. Unless you do something dull like tossing a coin there's not many other ways of settling it. Knowing Blatter he'll come up with some shite like awarding the win to whoever had the most possession or the most shots on target or some shite like that.

The only alternative I do like (and I think I'm about alone in it) is the american style shootouts. Aye, I know, Americanised crap and all that, but its the one American thing I'd be happy to see brought in. Not sure how long you get but your penalty taker gets the ball on the half way line and has something like 10 seconds to score. I like this better than traditional penalties because I think it actually involves a higher degree of skill- having to run from half way means you need a lot of composure, centre backs who just blast a penalty would struggle. It also means the ability of the keeper becomes a factor as they can do a lot to try and narrow the angle/ put the attacker off etc rather than simply having to guess where a penalty is going. On the whole though, I'm happy with penalties as they are

Strange that. I can't remember this ever being a talking point in FIFA when England (or an English club) have lost an important match on penalties.

Didn't Inter Milan do that in some friendly tournament one season? I seem to remember Robbie Keane trying to round a keeper from a penalty.

Should try the ice hockey approach, player starts with the ball on the halfway line and tries to score within a given time frame.

you're not - I think this would be much better for exactly the reasons you explain. It still has the same nervous tension as a penalty shootout, but skill from both sides becomes more of a factor
