Blackburn in for Jon McLaughlin

Can a player be approached in the last six months of a contract?

McGlaughlin has a reputation for not renewing contracts.
Personally , i'd let him go at the end of the season or get a decent amount for his transfer either way but that's my opinion. There are definitely better keepers out there and I wouldn't be unhappy with Burge between the sticks.

I think the player himself is more likely to influence this.

A solid championship team with higher wages vs a league 1 team that only might be promoted.

If this was true he could be gone.

Aye, especially if he feels he's been fucked around here. Not sure what kind of wages he's wanting (someone had suggested he was asking for loads more than we'd ever pay at this level) but I'd hope we'd speak to him, he's back in good form and is part of a solid looking defence, would rather he was focused on the run in knowing his future is here, rather than mentally already packing for Blackburn!

We may never know. I'm sure it will be the popular opinion on here to blame SD but for all we know McLaughlin may be wanting too much on basis he knows he can walk into the championship at any point no bother.

Fans cant have it both ways. For 10 years we all know we paid ridiculous wages to bang average players which eventuallyneed finished the club. Recently weve had an ownership team who negotiate absolutely everything. That means we will inevitably miss out on targets etc.

But for me we have absolutely needed this phase of SD ownership to rebaseline everything.

From a sensible and selfish option I would hope he'd sign a deal with clauses relating to promotion or failure to be promoted to the championship.

He wouldn't be a huge miss if he went. He keeps blaming the club for the contract situation, but as someone mentioned, he had a reputation for not signing deals. It's his own doing imo. Have more than a reasonable back up keeper in Burge.

We know from our last season in the championship. JM is a good keeper. Better than burge. And someone who I'd be happy with in the championship. I just dont understand why we haven't extended his contract.

From JMs point of view it’s his last chance for a new contract. He is 32 and would want at least a 2 year contract.
I like him and hope he stays at least till the end of the season but I certainly wouldn’t want SD paying the high wages his agent apparently asked for and for a minimum of 2 years. It’s these type of situations (Cattermole for example), good player, getting on a bit so we give them a bumper contract and end up stuck with them, we need to avoid.

If Blackburn bid, he's a goner.

If they offer a decent amount could see us taking given the fact we already have someone in Burge that could replace him
Depends upon what you'd class as a decent amount? Doubt they'll be offering very much for a 32 year old league one goalkeeper who is out of contact in six months.

I wouldn't sell any player if it reduced the quality of the first XI. Grigg can go, Big Jon mustn't.

It’s mad we’ve let it get to this. Not that I’m a massive fan of the lad, he’s alright. If Blackburn give us £100k or similar, least we get a bit of money.
