Some of this is psychological I think. If the bottom 5 had all played at the same time as opposed to 3 phases of games, then we would be reflecting that we had moved from 5 points from safety with a massively worse goal difference (effectively 6 points) to 5 points from safety with a better goal difference. Not a big step I grant you, but still effectively a point nearer being able to escape.

A bit nearer 5th bottom as well.

Chin up lads, a lot to go for here. Hoping I still feel like this after Monday’s game

But when you counter the fact it is Birmingham we are now pretty much solely trying to catch - a big club with a big budget and a decent manager, good Championship players that they stole from Brentford (Jota, Dean), as well as the likes of Stockdale, Roberts and a few others then it is MUCH more difficult than catching a League One budget side (Barnsley) who have just had their manager poached from them and sell on any half decent player they have (Bree, Winnall, Mawson, Hourihane, the aforementioned Roberts). You'd much rather be trying to peg back the likes of Burton, Barnsley and Bolton than a Bimingham, so while we may have added confidence to take us into the upcoming games, as we are a game down and trying to catch a better team, I don't think our position has got better despite being 'effectively' a point better off as you say.

We can't start relying on other teams we can still stay up if we win the next 2 - if us and Brum keep winning then we just pull the likes of Bolton and Reading into the mix.
I hope so mate . The other teams have been dropping points around us and we’ve been dropping points when opportunities have arisen.

We’re 8 points adrift of those man
Win a couple, they lose a couple. Suddenly it's 2 points. They are down this end of the table for a reason

Oh yeah, I think we are still fucked. It's too little. too late but you never know.............

they battered us. They have a better team than us. Our luck has run out and when you look back at games we have just handed to the opposition this season then it' an absolute disgrace we are going down

It does feel as if we've left it too late - be typical Sunderland to suddenly find form and run out of time!

Last night gave us hope and that’s it for now, need to take every match as it comes and see what happens because nobody knows for certain but it’s clearly a big ask. Only got ourselves to blame with the home games we’ve thrown away including those two teams this thread is about, Barnsley, Brentford, Bolton and probably many more.

Really needed no more than a draw for Birmingham today.

Lose on Monday and Birmingham win their next game and that will be it good and proper.

I am not sure we can stay up like, its just too late, although we played so well last night

We are going to have to win 4 or 5 in a row
