I've just seen a flock of about 12 birds flying north east over SR3.

Approximately seagull size (allowance should be made for the small/far away conundrum) with lightish under belly and distinctive downward curved beaks.

Sorry, no more details as I was driving at the time.

Any ideas?

Doubt it Hank.

I could be wrong but the body and wing shape was unlike any goose/geese that I've seen before.

Is there a species of goose that has a downward curved bill?

I saw some Curlews down the riverside near-ish North Hylton when I was back home a few month back.

They have a downward curve beak.
