Billy Hughes

He lived in our street when I was very small. Me Dad was playing a good level of non league and went to bed early on a Friday and Billy was playing for Sunderland and Billy didn’t apparently !
I heard him and Tony Towers enjoyed a pint in the South Hylton club.

Billy Hughes was class.

Although Dave Watson went on to play regularly for England, I think Tueart only had a few games. Monty was kept out of the England team by Ray Clemence and later, Shilton.
Porterfield got injured in a car crash and was never quite the same again and Bobby Kerr was outshone by Billy Bremner in a very good Scotland Team that qualified for two World Cups.

In another era, the 73 Team could have had three Scotland and three England internationals. It was no fluke that they won the Cup.
Billy Hughes was one of the stars of the team.

How good was he ? And what type of player was he ? I mean I know he was a class act and obviously a legend for us. Asking cos Mayenda did something 2nd half where he held it up and flicked it round the defender and somebody was likening it to Billy Hughes.
I can see why you make a comparison with Mayenda. Billy was a better player but Eliezer is still young and improving ... both run at defenders and really drive. Billy's first touch was far better and he perhaps had more of a trick but both look great going at pace at defenders.
Check out Billy's goal v Manchester City in the 1973 FA Cup fifth round (first game)... he picks the ball up around half way and drives straight for goal, fends off the defender and caps a 45-yard run with a brilliant finish past Corrigan! That's the kind of run Mayenda often tries.
And; as someone posted above, Billy was sensational in the Roker replay.
