Roker for me was v West Ham when we went up, and at Sol was v Newcastle, 2-2 draw but atmosphere was fantastic.

Probably not the best ever but this stands out...

Roker on top of the promotion class

Monday, 11 December 1995

Sunderland 6 Millwall 0

That hot bed of football passion, the North-east of England, today has three teams in the top four. The only trouble is Sunderland are a League behind.

But for how long? As Peter Reid - like neighbouring managers Kevin Keegan and Bryan Robson a once outstanding player - said after his side humiliated the former leaders Millwall: "We were a different class."

It is an oft-repeated homily this season that the teams at the top of the Endsleigh League are much of a mediocre muchness, and the battered Lions have now slipped back into the nine teams in a chasing pack separated by two points. Yet Sunderland stand three points clear with a game in hand.

To reach the top, Reid has learnt from Newcastle and Middlesbrough. Solid at the back with Richard Ord and the Welsh international Andy Melville, he also has grit in midfield.

This comes in the balding form of Steve Agnew who, with Martin Gray, stifled Millwall's much-vaunted midfield allowing the young talents to create.

These are the floppy-fringed wingers, Michael Gray and Martin Smith, who tear at defences with pace and poise. Smith provided centimetre-perfect passes for three of the six goals.

A notable hat-trick, but the 21-year-old home-bred striker Craig Russell went one better with four goals. This has been Reid's major problem position and he has tried David Kelly, Phil Gray and Lee Howey to little avail.

"Craig's just a quality finisher," said Reid. "But some of the balls that went into the box were excellent quality as well. And he missed the easiest chance which should have finished an exceptional move."

Millwall manager Mick McCarthy flew into a rage and dashed straight off, leaving only Uwe Fuchs to defend his team. "It was too easy for Sunderland to score goals," he said.

Millwall never looked likely to score. They managed just four wild shots, although a goal-line clearance by Ord from Fuchs when the score was still sensible might have made a difference.

With Sunderland planning a pounds 14m stadium, Reid is heading for promotion to the same class as Keegan and Robson.

Best at Roker - v Bristol city 0-0 (me first game)

Best at the SOL - v Sheff Utd play off semi

For atmosphere mine would be Chelsea FA cup quarter final at Roker Park and Sheff Utd Play Off semi-final at the SOL. I missed the mags win 2 seasons ago cos i was at a mates wedding.

The game against Charlton when we scored all the own goals...I had a most delicious Bovril and a very entertaining pukka pie. The mexican waves were also nice.

At the sol.

How many did Proctor get?

This one has been done to death.

When we moved from Roker Park the Sunderland Echo produced the top 50 games ever at RP, I think it was Bob Graham who did it for them.

I would imagine that anyone who saw the 1973 game v Man City will vote for that one as it came top.

Sunderland 3 -Manchester United 2.
The mancs took the lead within minutes and were 2 up straight after, it was the first time i ever so the regular old blokes start to walk out muttering we would get hammered.
:lol::lol:

Roker - Man City 5th round replay 1973

Sol - Chelsea Dec 1999

I seriously doubt any game will ever come close to the Man City game

Chelsea in the cup Armstrong etc... It's very personal. If I watched the same game now it would not mean as half as much as it did then. Too young for Man City in 73.

I could have had striker status three times over if I had replied to every single best game/ever/roker/sol thread that's been on this board.

Maybe we should just make this thread a sticky.

Roker 4-3 against West Ham was some game, Brady tearing the 'ammers a new arsehole, for atomoshere the 1992 replay against Chelsea. (To young for 1973 against Man City)

SoL, probably beating the filth the last time they came to town

Roker - Chelsea 2-1 1992 FAC Round 6.
Sol - Chelsea 4-1, 1999/2000.

Man city - fa cup 73
sheff utd - play off
was 12 yr owld stood on me board in the main stand paddock for the city game me fatha had his arms either side of me so a never got crushed  it was the best night ever at roker. Sheff utd in the play offs was the loudest most hostile atmosphere ever at the sol, if we could recreate that every home match we`d never lose cos that night the noise was unreal ;)
