Some great ones mentioned here, my personal favourites are Amy Lee, Julianne Regan and Amy Macdonald.
I love the vocals on this......Wanda Jackson.

Still listen to those 3 albums from time to time. Tremendous.
I revisited Static and Silence a few months back great album kind of got lost in the Britpop era.

First album superb too gonna download it now for my walk to work tomorrow.

It is entirely possible to enjoy and recognise the quality of folk purity, classic American songbook interpretations, singer songwriter Americana, modern jazz stylings, soulful vocalising AND recognise a fun, well crafted, high production value, charming pop professional for exactly what she is- cut through the crap and hear that she's got a good voice too

I try to lighten up a bit occasionally. It's good for the soul.
 
Dusty for me, brought song to life like no other woman I can think of.

Johnny Cash is my favorite male singer, for the same reason.
