Best england team for years.

Promising last night. But let's be honest once the tournament kicks off and we don't have the time and space to play in and we're struggling to break Russia down and string two passes together we'll realise the Germans couldn't really give a fuck about a friendly we had months before the tournament.

I have never known a manager had so much criticism for something he hasn't even done (playing Rooney and Milner - which isn't even necessarily a bad thing) against praise for what he has done.

Seems like the entire country have it in for him.

Ya never know. I'd say Campbell/terry and ferdinand would of been better than smalling and cahill. Gary neville over Clyne. Left back would be debatable. Welbeck isn't as good as Owen. Rooney obviously been around both sets of players. Hart/butland/forster piss allover david James and Paul robinson. Lampard would be better than dier. It'd be a tight game I reckon
Left back isn't debatable if you're conparing any of our current left backs to ashley Cole.
A peak Ashley Cole was world class.

If Hodgson has the balls to stick with youth, I really think they now have the pace and finally the technique to compete at that level. Not saying they will win it but they would show a lot more than the older lot.

Just watched the game. Excellent performance. Young, hungry, promising players with a bit of team spirit and desire. That desire and energy could go a long way

Trouble is when it comes to The Euros I believe Hodgson will reinstate the old guard.....you know.....those players who have failed at every major tournament
I think Kane and Ali are in for the long term now. Ali gives an extra dimension to the midfield for such a young player.

Since its only a Euros, we should stay on track (and copy what Germany did) and really go with the younger lads and forget about the old hands.

Yes, German didn't do brilliantly at those Euros, but they won the next world cup....

Hopefully Dier is alongside him as well. May not catch the eye but he is obviously a good foil for Alli

Hodgson had the balls to go with a lot of youth in an attacking mindset in the world cup and it was largely hideous. I do prefer what I saw last night over what we've seen in the last 3/4 years and I don't think he'll change it too much, but we're kidding ourselves if we think we can perform like that in a tournament and it'll be that open and we'll go as unpunished.

He will probably end up at CB given the lack of talent there compared to midfield. Looks the type of player who would do a good job anywhere.

Dont think we are too far off, maybe a couple of years away from being truly competitive. Strangely the biggest worry is now our defence where I have normally thought that was our strongest part but hopefully it will come together so at least we put up a good showing.

There is a dearth of good central defenders worldwide and it seems defending in general is a bit of a dying art. Stones and Smalling will probably be the long term defensive duo for England. Both have their limitations when it comes to defending but are probably the best to choose from.

Unbelievable the amount stick Roy gets on here. P 17 D 2 L 1. His record speaks for itself, some people seem to hate for the sake of it.

For me, it's just the old track record of English managers (both at international and club level) who just go back to the "old timers" out of a sense of loyalty.

Last night England in the 2nd half played fast flowing football, if you put Rooney into that he insists on slowing the play down, holding the ball up and passing it backwards rather than going forward or wide.

For me, Rooney has been past it for a few seasons, yet he manages to claw a run together each season that prolongs both his international captaincy and the media love-in around him (i know its not a very good yard stick but Adrian Durham is the epitome of this).

This. The received wisdom that he's a defensive 4-4-2 manager who doesn't blood young players is so far off beam it's hilarious.
