Best Anti Virus or Clean Up Programs

Just after some advice from some techy people. I'm using free Avast.

My laptop is approx 8 years old 4GB but slow. Probably could do with a new one tbf.

Any ideas how I secure it from virus's, spyware & malware also quicken it up?

Malware Bytes is canny for clearing stuff up and removing shite from you PC .

Avast is fine and also use Malwarebytes for malware: Free Cyber Security & Anti-Malware Software

Crap cleaner clears all your caches, temp files, cookies etc. You can use it to tidy up the registry, start up programs etc too. The free version is fine for doing this.

If you want to pay for something WinUtilities is brilliant: WinUtilities Professional Edition
It does all of the above better, defrags and optimises your hard disk.

Honestly this.

Firstly, most importantly, make a proper backup.

Then you can reinstall Windows from scratch.
It comes with good av protection anyway.

There’s not a lot you’ll be able to do to get much speed out of your current laptop that will be more economical than buying a new one.

4gb seems ok for ram. What processor do you have?

Another thing to look at for speed improvement is startup tasks. Click near the clock to see if you have tonnes of icons. If you do, uninstall any that you don’t need.

On the hardware front, I’ve seen a great speed improvement by going from a hdd to ssd on my machine.

I use Avast and also find it fine for general protection...
The only way to get back to the performance you used to have is to do a complete re-install of the OS... can't imagine you'd want to do that....
If it's just a performance boost you're after, then swapping your existing hard drive for a solid-state disk is the biggest jump I've had... had an old laptop that used to take best part of 5 mins to boot..... with an SSD that went down to about 40secs.....
