Beer Prices

Love neck oil but don’t drink it as much now. Had two pints in the airport the other week as a treat 7.29 a pint 🍺

My mate is a spark and was doing some work in a little country pub once.
It gets to 5ish and a stream of blokes would come in, buy a pint, read the paper, some not even talk and then leave.
As it kept going, my mate asked the barman what the deal was with this constant flow of people not interacting having a pint and leaving.
Barman said that they pub was going to close a couple of years back and the publican wrote to every house in the village and said that unless people used it, there wasn't any point staying open and he'd sell up. So the village council agreed that people would spend a few pounds a week per household to keep it open so that when they wanted to use it, it was open. Seemed to work well, it was quite a posh village and they liked the idea of the place being there as a facility, so most of the blokes would all call in and have a pint a day on the way home from work.
As the place was now always open, it now got a bit of passing trader and started doing food, so it didn't need the daily visits, but many just kept it up as they got used to a pint after work before going home.
Good idea, would probably only work in small villages down to their last remaining bar tho.

Unless you're an absolute alcoholic does it make a great deal of difference to your life? I don't throw money about willy nilly but I'm never bothered how much a pint costs when I'm out.

I always think this, I can only drink so much so even if you stick £2-3 a pint on the “old” price….is that £20 enough to make me want to stop in?

Heineken own my local and have been tightening the thumbscrews for as long as i can remember with the barrel costs, seemingly oblivious or indifferent to what a typical punter in that locale is willing to pay.

It's getting daft now, and I do think we are sleepwalking towards the extinction of the local. Fifty quid odd a bar bill seems to be the norm if I go out for a few with the other half, and closer to a ton if it's a decent session. Completely unsustainable to do it more than a couple of times a month now. I don't even go out for a couple of social ones on a school night any more, as at 20 quid a pop they soon add up as well.
Theres no sleepwalking into extinction, its as clear as day where its heading.

Great ! I’m there in 2 weeks time. Best top the kitty up

We are as well, it’s expensive no doubt, but so are all major world cities….however loads of more reasonable places if you dodge the tourist traps, and make the most of happy hours that a lot of places run and it evens itself out.

That said, there is ZERO excuse for the $15 can of Fosters at the hockey :)

I’m just being a tight bugger.
We tend to go to Hells Kitchen to eat and drink on a night and always found it reasonable.
Will have the odd beer while walking around doing the sights / rooftop bars and such like but it’s not a going out and getting hammered holiday anyway

In general, people are living healthier lifestyles

In general, people have less disposable income

In general, people can socialise on thier phones from thier front rooms

The three main ingredients that when combined are deadly for the pub trade.

Add in multiple channels and multiple TVs / devices in the home, which means the need to escape the soaps is diminished.

Agreed, but those places aren’t what I class as pubs marra. Places full of cackling women drinking Proseccos and knackers buying lattes cease to be pubs imo. There’s a place for both imo.

The things is that business owners have worked out there is money to be made from selling gin cocktails at 15 quid a pop. That's why there's a Botanist opening in Sunderland while old school pubs are closing.

Oh aye. The margin on those cocktails will be daft. The youngens can’t resist an expensive drink

Rudy’s is always a good shout round there for a bit people watching over a cheap beer….if you haven’t been already.

I’m just glad the kids are still U21 :)

The biggest mystery to me is the price of Amstel and Coors Light

Some pubs happily charge a really premium rate for them, others have them marginally dearer than Carling/Fosters but a long way short of Moretti etc

But in cans they're always among the cheapest of the lot

Thanks , I’ll bear that one in mind.
Unfortunately my kids are 22 & 25 so it’s going to be expensive 🤣

Thing is that extra £20+ you’d pay if you’re paying a couple of pound extra per pint and say have 10 pints over a session, could’ve been your taxi fare home, so it still makes a difference imo. Not enough to make me want to stop in I admit, I’m more likely to just suck it up and absorb the extra cost like I’ve always done, but it’s a bit of a pisser and might mean you go out a bit less often or choose to stay more local when you do rather than venture further afield into one of the towns.
