Wasn't at all, he merely came here and proved what Bardsley lacks, though obviously he's not the complete footballer himself.

Bardsley is a trier and an all rounder. He's as good going forward as he is defensively, which isn't very. His defensive work is vastly overrated because he tries hard and chucks himself into tackles, when actually it's average at best.

Hutton due to his style leads him to be stretched defensively at times, but what he can give going forward is what teams aspiring to be good need and what someone like Larsson could desperately use. He's just come off the back of a season where everyone struggled at Villa and he was restrained from doing what he does best, hence he suffered as much as anyone.

There's no real competition to who's been the best player between them both over the last 4/5 years, because it's Hutton by a country mile.

Spot on. Hutton was fantastic when he was on loan for us. He was a stand out player and a different class right back compared to what we've had to put up with over the years.

Although I agree Hutton is very shite, I would still say he's the best RB we've had at the club Post Drummaville takeover, that's shocking.

Puts into perspective the shite we've had to put up with over the last 6 years really.

Halford, Nosworthy, McShane, Edwards, Whitehead, Bardsley, Chimbonda, Ben-Haim, Ferdinand, Hutton, Angeleri, Onuoha, Elmohamady, Gardner and O'Shea.

I think that's everyone who has played at right back since we returned to the PL.

 Look at the state of that man. Not one decent RB amongst the lot of them (well, maybe Chimbonda but he couldn't be arsed when he was here).

Callum Davenport?

Totally forgot about that joke.

Proved here and at Spurs (where Bardsley wouldn't get a game) he isn't. One poor season at Villa where most struggled under an inept defensive manager doesn't make him worse.

So when a defender doesn't have a great season it's down to the manager.
I'll have to remember that one for all positions.

But we want a couple of strikers and a replacement for our next weakest link. Unsure why that's so hard to understand?

Yes but football is a lot more than just tackling.

right back is not a priority when we're after 3 or 4 quality players. If we want to start buying right backs we might as well sign 6 or 7 players and have yet another rebuild as Bardsley is far from the weak link. I'd say we have 4 players who can fill in at right back and be fairly solid.

Ask Villa fans and they'd carry him up here on their backs.

Everyone states we have 4+ more important positions to fill then RB yet no one as of yet has been able to name me them.

He's slow, he hoofs the ball rather than passing it, he's poor positionally. And his aimless punts towards the back post from a deep position dont count as contributing to an attack.

He's also a thug and is likely to get sent off at any moment. More so than another other player IMHO. Including Cattermole.

Of course the highlighted statement is not borne out by the actuality. According to Soccerbase, Bardsley's disciplinary record in the Premier League since joining the club is as follows :-

2007-08 11 games 3 yellow 0 red
2007-08 28 games 11 yellow 0 red
2007-08 26 games 8 yellow 0 red
2007-08 34 games 5 yellow 0 red
2007-08 31 games 4 yellow 1 red

Just in case you think the above figures have been artificially 'massaged' to omit his dreadful record in cup competitions and international matches, I would point out that he has been booked once in these matches.

As may be seen, his disciplinary record is actually improving and it is certainly not bad for a tough tackling full-back.

I would not argue that Bardsley could not be improved upon, but, as others have pointed out on this board, actually coming up with the name of realistic alternatives who would be guaranteed to be an improvement is problematic and, in any event, right-back is not among the highest priorities for positions that need to be urgently addressed with the amount of transfer funds that are likely to be available.

He has just had his worst eason for us disciplinary wise.
1 sending off then a ban for a cowardly stamp on Mata

Bardo has improved vastly since his short tenure at Villa.

He's certainly not as bad as some on here make out.
Absolutely but why do people have this obsession of looking at our current squad and second guessing what O'Neill has in mind for next season? There will be a lot more players through the door before the end of this transfer window.
