Bardo

Except neither of them are.

Err, they are. And Hutton showed that he was much better than Bardsley when he was on loan to us. It was a joy to watch a right back actually get forward and contribute to our attacking play.

I think Bardo is more of a liability than people seem to realise.

Bardsley would be a good squad player but his passing is shockingly bad and isn't that good defensively.

For me after bringing in new strikers in we should be looking to replace Bardsley.

I agree 100% with these. I don't get the criticism of Bardsley. He's a solid mid-table Premier League full back playing for a mid-table Premier League club. Some fans have ideas above their station - If we are only making 3 or 4 quality signings this season is right back really more of a priority than 2 strikers and a creative/pacy midfielder?

Right back is low on our list of priorities for at least another season, probably more likely 2 or 3.

Are you Steve Bruce?

Nathaniel Clyne.
Alan Hutton.

There's two and I don't have Football Manager, nor do I religiously read 442 magazine. I imagine there tonnes of better right backs in Germany, Holland and France etc.

Alan Hutton is dogshite, and is hated by the fans at Villa because of it.

Wouldn't mind Clyne however.

I agree ^

Take Clyne for instance. It's only a matter of time before a Premiership team go in for him. Why not us? I only saw Palace about 3 times last season on the box but when I did I was impressed with this kid. Very quick, good on the ball and was cracking going forward.

When Bardsley has the ball it's like he's barefoot and kicking around a hot potato on a pitch of nails.

Are you Steve Bruce?

I wouldn't take the Villa fans views to seriously. They think all their players are dogshit. Do you know what they thought of Bardsley whilst he was there?

As for Hutton, I saw enough of him whilst he was here to realise he was a good player and one of the best (if not the best) right backs I've seen at the club. Like I say, I only base this opinion on his 4 or 5 month loan spell.

Try telling the Villa fans that, he's been shocking for them, the fans don't like him.

As for Clyne, he gets linked to lower-end Premier League clubs every transfer window, but nobody ever bids for him. I don't know much about him, but there's got to be a reason for this.

Why? Because he's 21 and hasn't yet played in the Premiership, that's why. But someone will take a chance on him, probably someone like Everton and as per it will pay dividends.

We should take a risk on Clyne, like the mags took a risk on Cisse, and we all know how that one turned out. He can't be any worse than Bardsley anyway.

Bardsley is a decent enough player. Never going to be a world beater but is a decent mid-table premier league right back and doesnt deserve half the shit he gets on here. I've always quite liked him if i'm honest and looking ahead to new players. I would put a left back, centre midfielder, right winger and 2 strikers on the list of positions we need to improve before I even looked anywhere else.

He is also decent cover at left back and has a canny shot on him.

I didn't know this but apparently it's correct. O'Neill had him as a player on loan at Villa in 2008 and released him to go back to Man U. Wasn't interested in pursuing him on a permanent deal.

I can't imagine that was cost related and I can't think he has changed as a player dramatically (Suppose he has improved a bit, at least in our fans eyes due to his POTS award)

Does suggest that perhaps O'Neill doesn't rate him (I do hope though he is not planning on playing Cuellar there and we get a proper RB)?

Yes it is

We had Jonny Evans on loan a few years ago, apparently

Bardo is a decent defender but gives away possession so often under NO PRESSURE AT ALL that I rate him a liability to the club. IMO we should unload him to the highest bidder.

He's slow, he hoofs the ball rather than passing it, he's poor positionally. And his aimless punts towards the back post from a deep position dont count as contributing to an attack.

He's also a thug and is likely to get sent off at any moment. More so than another other player IMHO. Including Cattermole.

Bardo has improved vastly since his short tenure at Villa.

He's certainly not as bad as some on here make out.

It's a two-way street, though. He isn't anywhere near as good as others on here make him out to be, either.

We replaced him already.

That would seem to be the case to me. Cuellar played two seasons under O'Neill at Villa. The only position he really got a run in was right back. He played 46 games in MON's last season there, almost all of them at right back. He signed both Richard Dunne and James Collins the year after he signed Cuellar then played them both ahead of him.

With the injury history of Brown and to a lesser extent O'Shea, still think Bardsley will play a decent amount of games. Don't think he will be a first choice anymore though.

This, I don't think people realise how much not having an attacking fullback inhibits us. "Aye but he tackles hard and pumps his fists" is most peoples response.

I see its still the In thing to diss Bardsley.

Of all our our squad he isnt even in the top five of problem positions or players.

Explain what he does well and then name the top five "Problem Positions"?

There is an element here though of people applying their own tactical ideals to our plans for next season. Whatever we personally like in footballers, the key issue is what MON's plans are. If his plans are to free up the best attacking talent by using more 'stay at home' type defenders, then attacking full backs are the last thing we should expect, or even want for that matter.
