Wife was subjected to an attempt today, very very convincing and they did that thing where when she rang the contact number on the card she was still speaking to scammers.
She's very clever and quite savvy yet they were nearly convincing her to "move funds to another account" due to supposed bogus activity/purchases.

I came in at back end of call and basically said we're not transferring money anywhere and line went dead.

Can easily see how people are taken in.

Daughter got one. The phone number was the same as Barclays? Which she has saved on phone. Said her card (new one which didn’t arrive) had been used in a fashion shop for £300. And asked for her for account details. She rang Barclays who new nothing about it. Be very careful. Speak to no one. Not even the bank. (Their words)
 
If they ring you on the house phone I'd hang up and ring the bank number on my mobile. If they rang me on my mobile I'd know they were full of shit as I get notifications to my phone and am required to enter their security number that they text if I'm trying to add a payee etc. I would know if I was adding a payee, I'd also be able to look at my accounts and see anything pending or flag up anything that looked dodgy.
I have 2 step verification on most things and run regular virus checks on my laptop / phone so they cant do me with "key loggers".
 
I don't trust anyone who rings me. I should like a right twat when someone does call and never give out any details, ever.
 
2 people claiming to be from Barclaycard tried it with me over the weekend claiming I had some suspicious transactions on my account.
Just told them thanks , I’ll log online and have a check and if anything’s untoward I’ll ring Barclaycard back on the number on my card.
Needless to say both hung up straight away.
The thing is they both sounded very convincing, so I’d imagine it’s easy to be taken in by them.

This feels impossible?

Are you saying she rang her bank on a genuine bank number and they intercepted the call?
 
I just got back in just before 12-00 and the phone has rang 3 times. Could be conmen, don't know as i (almost) never answer the phone.

Any number that comes up on my mobile, that has no name next to it gets ignored.
 
Had my bank call a while ago and they asked me to confirm who I was by giving them letters from my banking password. I refused as they were the ones ringing me and should know who I am.
Turns out it wasn’t a scam and was actually my bank calling me. Pretty sure loads of ppl did the same so they changed the way they offered phone services after this.

what happened to daughter. Well they rang her and it was Barclays number.

Had a missed call from an unknown number at 1.37 am last night. Proper weirded me out. Was thinking maybe the police use unknown numbers etc.
 
Only the other month I had my credit card billing address changed, and my card reported as stolen and a new card ordered.

The same day I had my mobile phone reported as stolen and my number disconnected.

Still waiting for the fallout, identity fraud etc, but it’s never materialised.

Took out and Experian subscription for a few months after to keep an eye on things.

Aye our lass got the same. I intervened when I heard they wanted her kids’ details to move her money to. Were going to scam them an all.
I took the phone off her and spoke a few obscenities before they hung up.

I had £750 taken from my account the other week. Was a bills account so very very rarely use anything other than bills. Couldn’t find my other card when ordering an Indian (a one in Houghton) so put my card details in, next thing you know I’m being scammed. Loads of stories of same thing online if you search, involving said restaurants/takeaways.
 
im a fraud analyst for a bank and this is so common. 5 years ago most bank fraud resulted from stolen and hacked bank details but fraud systems are so good now that it knows when a transaction is unusual and can block them, so now the fraudster has to get the customer to bypass the bank's fraud controls by scamming them.

its really easy for fraudsters to spoof a bank's or any other phone number, as another poster said, never speak to anyone on the phone who calls unexpectedly.

Good news is that most banks are signed up to an agreement where they refund the customer unless they have been grossly negligent and the ombudsman is very much on the customer's side, so fewer people should be out of pocket.

bad news is that banks and their systems are not set up to deal with this sort of fraud and their call centres are full of young, inexperienced people who are under pressure to get through the calls and not probe customers too deeply, even specialist fraud staff. The fraudsters you speak to are twice as professional that the actual bank staff you deal with.

police arent interested and the teams within banks that investigate cases for enforcement action are tiny, its more or less risk free for a fraudster

Must be costing banks a fortune and yet they still won't sufficiently invest in deterrent.

just shows the profit they making elsewhere
