Bands where people only tend to know one member

Elton John

Nigel Olsen, Somebody Johnstone and Ray Cooper off the top of my head. Two from his early albums and one later but apparently long served addition. I think. And I don’t like Elton John apart from his first two or three albums.

I reiterate the ‘we were interested’ woffle and ‘we read the music magazines’ back-in-the-day shite from earlier in the thread but I add that we also read credits on album sleeves. I knew the names of session players. ( Paul Buckmaster - off the top of my head, was an orchestral arranger on early Elton John albums. Christ I hope I got that right or I’ll look a Wally 😀). And even if we were around a mates house and he was playing something we didn’t own ourselves, we’d read the sleeve.

Maybe it’s just me. I was at a quiz the other day and I recalled that Edith Head was a customer designer and shared also Ken Morse was a ‘rostrum cameraman’ … because I read the credits on movies and tv programmes.

But I don’t think it’s me. We just used to want to know who played the bass on Mountain albums (Felix Pappalardi) or what the name of the original keyboard player in Santana was. (It was Greg Rolie - he was in Journey iirc for a bit anarl).

No biggie. Just a thing most of the people I knew were interested in.
Roxy Music, after Eno left.

Well I can (partially) name them all including the bloke on violin who iirc replaced Eno. I stood next to him at a bus stop once, around that time. And he went on to work with Zappa. Eddie Jobson. And there was somebody Mackay on sax, Phil Manzanera on guitar, Paul Thompson on drums and a bloke who wasn’t an official member on bass - Gudmanson or something. Plus Bryan Ferry.

Given that’s exactly the same line up except that Eno isn’t there and Eddie Jobson is, I can’t see what the difficulty or the difference is.

I agree, and could name every member of the band through the ages, but most people tend not to know that, and could name only Ferry. I thought that was the point of the thread?

I get that. But the thread title reads ‘people’ and I’m a pedantic twat. Plus I’m an awkward bugger challenging assumptions all over this thread. It’s coz I’m an aged curmudgeonly tospot. Nothing personal. 😀😉

Hall and oates
Definitely true !!!
Went to see H&O at the Manchester Apollo over 30 years ago.
Daryl Hall was centre stage, dominating the gig.
Poor little Johnny Oates, was way back in the wings, as if he was a session musician.
Know they split up, but not sure why ?
