As someone said the train stations normally have left luggage lockers. Recently did this albeit in London but I guess Sunderland station might also offer it

Did they not get rid of them for security reasons

Highly unlikely a terrorist would be trying to get into a stadium with two suitcases like.

Quite often go to an away game by train with small backpack as I'm stopping over for the night and a 3pm kickoff makes it too early to check-in to hotel. Wembley is very strict on anything bigger than a small handbag but never had a problem elsewhere. At least in London there are no shortage of alternatives. Any decent hotel will offer bag storage.

no they don’t get rid of them! It’s a service you pay a few quid for - think it was about a tenner for the day - and part of leaving it the bag is scanned. You then go and collect it with your ticket later. Thinking about it Sunderland station may not offer it but Newcastle central definitely would
