Away Goals

Just me who wishes they never abolished this rule?

Was watching a European game the other week where in the second half of the second leg I was thinking the away goals rule would have the potential to create some real drama here and would be the same situation with Boro vs Southampton tonight.

Apart from the short lived sudden death rule which was crap in comparison there is no other situation in football where a single goal can change everything and it used to lead to some cracking endings.

Not sure why they ever got rid of it.

Probably a couple of reasons. One is it might have encouraged more defensive play from a home team in the first leg, especially if they're not the favourite to win the tie to play to keep the opposition at 0 and worry about goal in the second leg. Secondly, really a bit shit to go out because you drew both games but your home tie just happened to be a higher scoring draw.

They got rid because it lead to some very negative football. The home team always parked the bus as they didn’t want to lose the away goal advantage.

I think if they were to bring it back, then for me it should only be effective in extra time. That way it nullifies the home field advantage.

Tbh though, I have thought European football has been better since then binned it off.

Shite rule. Two teams score equal goals over two matches and one gans thru cos of away goals. Absolute tosh. I always hated it.
