Average house price of where you live

Wealth is a very strange concept. My brother worked at the local water board did well and got promoted to manager and has retired at 52 and now spends his time in his allotment and with his grandkids. He owns a three bed semi in Spennymoor so is no where near rich but is one of the happiest grounded people I know.

I was a bright kid at school got to medical school and have earned more money than my bro. However I have really never found the peace he has in life so have been divorced twice and had a load of upheaval and disruption in my life. I now have an amazing wife and a beautiful home but I probably need to work till I'm 70 to pay it off but relaxed about that as will probably sell up if I have had enough of work.

There was a study years ago about income and peak happiness and it was around 30k then so I suspect it's more like 50k now. If you can pay for your house and bills with a bit left over to treat yourself then anything else is just cock waving.

The richest people i know (still talk to/socialise with) are worth hundreds of millions of dollars but are stuck in an incredibly unhappy, loveless marriage and so far neither of them will pull the pin through sheer stubbornness, which we find ridiculous. it's not helping either of them and they're just making themselves and their kids more unhappy as it drags along. their wealth could actually free them both up, seems strange to collect all this money but not use it as an advantage

They should pay for a marriage counselling perhaps.

I knew one multi millionaire when I was younger (a supplier) and he told me one day that he was going for a divorce. About a month later he tells me he’s no longer looking to get divorced - the reason - he spoke to his solicitor to evaluate the potential cost and couldn’t stomach the pay out. I don’t think his wife knew anything about it.

No idea if he’s still married now but I got the impression back then that they lived almost separate lives anyway.

He was ok but a bit strange - told me that he didn’t have any friends, just acquaintances.

he offered her an exorbitant some of money to walk away, she said "no thanks". he is/was having an affair with another wife of the group (that couple are now divorced) so i have no idea why she wants to hang around. there's no love in the marriage whatsoever, they both seem really, really unhappy.

If he's keen to get away, doesn't have to make it official just buy another house & move out

he was planning to buy another house with the other (ex)wife but that all fell apart when she blew the lid that they were still seeing each other (we all thought they'd stopped seeing each other)
it's a complete shitfest now. lies, deception and so on... trying to keep out of the way of it all which is hard as we all have kids who are really good friends and at the same schools, same sports teams etc...
no idea why either of them are still being so stubborn

I'm in around £50k and it suits me perfectly as a single person. Never have to worry about paying bills and can afford to do just about anything I want.

I know a number of people on £80-100k but they have huge mortgages, 2-3 kids and stressful jobs.

My boss keeps telling me to go for a promotion which might bring in an extra £8-10k but take off 40% in tax then it would be around £100 per week more for a lot more responsibility and hassle

Its all relative. I'm as happy as pig in shit. I know folk richer and poorer than me who are equally as happy as me. Being content with what you have is the key.
