AV - whats the crack?

The situation you describe happened under FPTP.

Yes but AV will give us this every election instead of once in a blue moon.

I might hate the tories but at least they stand on what they believe in wheres Clegg need I say more.

If your first choice dosen't win you should just accept it instead of trying to meddle by voting for other candidates.

No it won't & how many pre election pledges have the tories actually kept?

And the fact is now getting into a PHD in statistical analysis tends to reinforce that fact that complicating the electoral sytstem to something beyond the comprehension of the vast majority of the electorate is madness and more akin to skewed results when folk havent got a clue how to drive the ballot paper...............

But lets do it anyway as those who do understand it like it and it works all over the world at the moment.............

I'm voting no.

If you're not confident enough to decide the one person you want to represent you then you should have your vote taken off you.

If you HATED the Tories, and wanted to vote for a minority candidate, but you knew that your vote would be the final one - and the tories would get in unless you voted Labour, what would you do?

This is the situation that many people face when voting, and its unfair to both them, and the other candidates who are in a essentially impossible situation.

All of these stats are total bullshit.

People would have voted differently in AV, so you can't even begin to comprehend how it would have been different.

I do hate the tories and I live in a tory seat.

It's only fair that the tories get in as they are the most popular here.

For me to want a voting system that might deprive them of that just because I don't want them to have it is unfair.

Do they poll over 50%? If not how do you know they're the most popular?
How do you know those Tory votes are actual Tory votes & not anti Labour/Lib Dem votes?

I think you will find it will. Thats why the liberals are keen on it.

Anybody who votes tory knows there will be a poorer health service, worse education and higher unemployment. Thats their choice even though I disagree with it.

I know a lot of people who gave the liberals a chance at the last election on the back of university fees and Iraq. What have they done? Lied completely and got involved in another muslim country.

The more I hear about AV the more power it will give the liberals and BNP. Think Im going to stick with what we have and say No.

The point is and you miss it completely that the vast majority of the voters wouldnt "begin to comprehend" the puzzle the ballot paper you want to give them would pose.....

Their vote is as valid as yours and just because you want something you understand that does not in any way shape or form mean its right for everyone else................

How many countries have it once again mate and how many of them want shot of it........

And thats without the not so hidden agenda on here which is the hope it kills the Tories off in the future which wouldnt be very clever as who would then sort out the fiscal mess the party of prudence historically leave behind when we finally get sick and vote them out..

The BNP are against it, as it'll be harder for them to get elected (as they need 50% of people to find the acceptable)

Yes the Libs will get more seats (which the do deserve, 25% of votes but 9% of seats?), but it doesn't mean that coalitions will happen every time. You'd probably get one once every 20/30 years just like now.

BTW - The tories are against it as they'd lose the most seats even though Cameron was elected Tory leader by AV

I thought I was for it but I've changed my mind after hearing the debate (not on here), and that's ignoring Osbourne's scaremongering and comments from Milliband like "a chance to choose hope over fear"

The real reason this is going on and why so many tories have pumped so much money into the NO campaign. Sad.

Post 149............

Why change then................

And both systems..............who has this at the moment and what percentage of them want shot of it..

And yes you did want a second vote to get the "correct " result from the population of Ireland and you argued long and hard over it.........

Shows what you think of the present day value of democracy mate.................

The Lisbon Treaty vote wasn't AV or STV.

And if I wanted a second vote and you know that, then the posts will be archived on here. To save your valuable time in searching, I'll be so kind as to inform you that you're incorrect.

AV is more democratic than FPTP.

We are millions of miles away on politics (and as your last paragraph shows you spout some bollicks! :-D) but at least we agree on this.

Cameron is a sh(t but I have a lot more respect for him than Clegg.

In allowing the tories to do what they have done (without a mandate) the liberals should be wiped out at the next election if there is any justice. AV wouldnt allow that and thats why Im voting No.

The no campaign is a fear campaign though.

You think this is a reasonable way to debate a subject then?

I read a leaflet from the No campaign today and it said:

"A vote Yes is a vote for Nick Clegg"

And that AV would "Benefit the BNP".

Lies and scare stories surely?

Just read the Alternative Vote leaflet. I think anybody who votes for that they want their heed examining.

If AV is Clegg and the liberals dream (and the reason why they are allowing the tories f%ck the country) they are even more stupid than I thought.

I hope the liberals are wiped out at the next election. Two faced useless c*nts.

Its a voting system. And like all voting systems it has its strengths and weaknesses.

The real reason this is going on and why so many tories have pumped so much money into the NO campaign. Sad.

Hows it sad, what do you expect them to do.

Who ever said it was ?

You argued long and hard for the yes decsion and it was a part of your argument for the justification of the second vote ever taking place....................

How many countries in the world have AV and what percentage of them want shot of it..?

Speaks volumes and even the EU wouldnt dare argue for a rerun...............

What puzzle? What is there to comprehend? You vote for your favourite, then you have the option to vote for lesser choices.

It is simplicity itself. I see the scaremongers have done a job on you. Such a shame that this referendum is being hijacked by such gits.

The fact they're arguing about the cost over the fainess says it all.
On that argument lets do away with democracy (as elections are expensive) and get in a dictator instead.
