AV - whats the crack?

What do you mean by 'the wasted vote'?

It's an emotional, but inaccurate term used for when someone votes for someone who isn't likely to win as they're not very popular.

It's not wasted, it's counted.

If an individual voter considers it wasted they are well within their rights to vote for someone else to start with.

A minority government would have been a disaster. How could they pass upon the oppertunity of a referendum on electoral reform? Every party would have done the same in that position.

and this government isnt?

I can understand PR to a point but to me AV is a waste of time.

Clegg has given the tories a lot of power for this AV vote and for me he shouldnt be rewarded for doing that.

A vote that doesn't go towards an elected candidate. It's a slightly overegged term, but what is means in real terms is that your voice can still be heard if your number 1 isn't at the races.

AV also helps to limit the impact of Gerrymandering.

It's not the best system, but you'd be losing nowt from FPTP and gaining a lot more besides.

I disagree.

True mate Clegg whored himself all over the place and whilst I think he made the right choice ( it was time for gordon to go) its going to rebound on him bigstyle............

Vince Cable who pre election had as much credibility as any politician out there is now rapidly descending into a rambling retard who needs to be put out of his misery...............

Have no time for either and after the next election I hope we never hear from them again. Ano vote for AV would confirm that I think.

I don't agree with what this government is doing, but with a minority nowt would get done & we'd be back to the polls in 6 months

How many MP's do the Tories have compared to the Libs?
I don't think Clegg is in much of a position to be 'giving' power, the power lies firmly with the main party in government, ie the Tories

Seems like a better system.

It's FPTP until someone doesn't get 50% of the vote, the people's 2nd and 3rd choices are considered.

The only people who should be afraid of it are the big parties who hope to govern on a minority.

Look at the campaigns. Yes are talking about fairness. No are talking about cost.

Last time I checked, returning officers didn't charge by the hour.

It is also fairer. In the example I gave before - First past the post

Seat A - Cons 20 votes, Libs 19 votes, Labour 2 votes
Cons = 1 seat
Seat B - Labour 20 votes, Libs 19 votes, Cons 2 votes
Lab = 1 seat

Votes Cast
Cons 22 = 1 seat
Labour 22 = 1 seat
Libs 38 = 0 seats

It seems you've looked into and made your mind up. I'll not argue, just keen to give a perspective from the other side of the fence.

the problem we had this time was that economic cicumstances really dictated that we needed some sort of political stability in terms of the government..

Had this not been so then the fact we might have had a minority administration wouldnt have been so relevant and another election in a year or so wouldnt have been any problem..............

Can you not see this about more than f***ing Nick Clegg. Look at the bigger picture, this can change politics in this country for the next 100 years, it's about more than simply pissing someone off you don't like today. You seem to want to play party politics in this rather than decide on what is "just" or "democratic". If so surely you see the tories will end up loosing by far the most seats under this system, why not vote for that outcome? Despite how much you hate the lib dems you can bet if the tories had had a majority they'd be going a lot further than they are. They'd have gutted the NHS by now for a start, an issue they're being forced to rethink as the Lib Dems know they can't support ANOTHER unpopular policy after allowing them to raise the tution fees cap/

Couldnt agree more mate. Clegg is the tories arse wipe.

He cost Labour a lot of votes in university cities with his 'pledge'. If he was that passionate about it he could have stood up but no he is looking at the bigger picture and his book deal in 4 years time.

You usually talk sensibly but this time I disagree with you. Currently, say you wanted a minority party (greens for eg), with FPTP you might not vote for them because your vote would be wasted so you vote for your preference of the big 2. With AV you can give your vote to your first choice (Greens) because you know other people might vote for them too on AV, so it does give the underdog a better chance of securing votes.

I can see your arguement mate but PR or AV will give more power to minority parties is the way I see it. The current system isnt perfect but at least you know where you stand.

By the way I have lost my job thanks to that c*nt Clegg who has allowed the tories to do whatever they like.

You say that, and then tell him to vote for a new electoral system because he doesn't like the tories  It's about a hell of a lot more than that as well.

It's nowt to with any party. IMO there should be no campaigning. Just 2 independently written 1 page leaflets, posted to every house in the country.

Let people make up their minds based on the facts.
