Ashes 5 test - The Oval

Thing is, we can't have it both ways, if think Curran should be in the side as a bit of an all rounder, need to accept our batting line up is a batsman short

Runs from Curran and Woakes will be vital here

With the team today, I'd move Buttler up to next in, give him a chance to play a bit more attacking with at least 2 batsmen rather than what's been happening where he had bowling all rounders and tail enders for company

This next session is crucial for the outcome in my opinion

With the way we are struggling, I would settle for an opener that bat's for 20 plus overs and scores next to nothing but wears the new ball bowlers down

The only problem with that is it’s good in theory, but sometimes with the quality fast bowlers like Australia have for example is that they bowl soo many good balls, that you bat for 10 or soo overs for next to nothing then gets out and we have no runs and wicket down, as ever it’s a question of balance.

Everyone seems to really want Denly to succeed as well.

I like him

He’s just giving his absolute all, he’s been hit loads

He has qualities to succeed, plays it late, good temperament just lacks bit of quality but worth playing if nobody else

I thought the same with Stoneman

Basically if we can’t find natural talents in 1,3 positions, I’d rather they played likes of Denly n rocky than Roy or an ODI player out of position

Least they can bat time

Fields well and bowls more than decent leggies too.

Its quite a difficult balancing act. They have invested in Denly and he has improved throughout the series where he now looks adequate and you have to remember this is a very good attack he is facing. I'm sitting on the fence only in so much that I dont really know the qualities of many playing in the CC. As you know I love to see Rocky succeed, I used to teach him when he was at school and know his family. However he has had a poor year and may even be dropped for Surrey's next game. I do see similarities in Stoneman and Denly in so much that they have both given test cricket a good go, havent disgraced themseleves but are probably just short of what is required to carve out a decent test career. Denly of course still has it in his own hands.
