Ashes 5 test - The Oval

People improve and learn over time. In Buttlers initial spell in test cricket he wasn’t good enough and got dropped. He was out of the side for some time and when he came back into the side his record had been just about as good as any of the other batsmen selected. Compare his record against Root, Stokes, Bairstow etc anyone else you like from the time he came back and it is as good as anyone’s.
That's not my point man.

Saying hes saying alright at Test level, that's fine. He is alright. That's all he is. Comparing his stats against the players you're mentioning since coming back isn't hard because the stats of Root, Bairstow and Stokes in that window are far from outstanding.

It's this ludicrous talk of him being one of the most talented batters at Test level, he gets good runs for only being a keeper when keepers tend to be big scorers and he's not in as a keeper to start with, he is shown disrespect and all the rest of this emotional nonsense.

Anyone would tell you the difference between being alright at Test batting and good is conversion, the difference between getting in and getting scores. He dosent get scores and I bet the precious scoring quickly theory hasn't led to even three wins.

I'm sorry but that's all the chat of someone who doesn't know much about Test cricket.

No-one disputing hes very good at one day

Hes average at Test level
That adds up to one of the most talented all round English players of all time?

Just express yourself properly rather than restoring to superlatives all the time man. It's like Donald Trump commentating on Test Cricket.

A line often used by people who can’t handle a counter argument and know little about test cricket! I’m not interested in how talented he is or whether he is or isn’t world class. I will argue that his record since he returned to test cricket is as good as any of his teammates and in my view deserves his place in the team. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think this argument is a bit too firmly put but ultimately correct. The statistic about Buttler doing better than most over the last twelve months says a lot more about this being easily the worst batting line-up England have had in my lifetime at test level.

I'd probably keep him in at seven and wicket keeper. Just about, though he'll still go into the next series under pressure, with Foakes breathing down his neck. And part of my thinking on that is driven by the fact I'd be looking to blood two top order batsman and bring Pope in - which is a hefty reconstruction anyway, without bringing in new bowlers and/or a new keeper too.

Simple as that agreed.
