Ashes 5 test - The Oval

Dom Bess showed a cracking batting technique so has been disposed of completely

They’ve done the same with Curran up to this test.

They’ll do the same with leach this time next year

They have to justify their place as bowlers. It's hingsight really - you looked at Chris Woakes record going into this series, and would you really have picked Curran ahead of him? Ahead of Broad or Archer? I don't think it was a selection howler, though the lad must surely be edging ahead of Woakes in the future considerations now.
To be seen.

There was no logic in selecting Overton but they did. Curran had a better batting side to bowl against in India and was player of the series 2018

Fast forward to now, he is worth the last test in 2019

Imo that makes no sense whatsoever

Aye, to be fair mind Overton was a stinking selection. Over-read the pitch.

Tim Paine is one of the worst players I’ve ever seen at test level

Anyone else agree or is that hyperbole?

His keeping has been awful and he’s a terrible batsman

Aye I’d have played him old Trafford too carty

They have a lot of faith in him though

He got picked to open the bowling ahead of broad in the windies for example

No he isn't.

He's very good at One Day.

He's very average at Test level.

Don't emote-prove it. What's his test average? How many 50's, how many tons how many parternships has he contributed to? You know, the considerations you make with literally every survivalist batsman to gauge their quality rather than just saying "aww man has amazing dont be mean".

You can literally prove in Test cricket whether someone is average or good with reference to the stats available and Butler doesn't behin to enter the conversation of good let alone one of the most talented English players ever by those metrics, not at all
People improve and learn over time. In Buttlers initial spell in test cricket he wasn’t good enough and got dropped. He was out of the side for some time and when he came back into the side his record had been just about as good as any of the other batsmen selected. Compare his record against Root, Stokes, Bairstow etc anyone else you like from the time he came back and it is as good as anyone’s.

They went with World Cup winners, but Curran as a left armer was the only differing option england had.

Woakes has looked spent since the lords test imo. Archer may not have played but for Anderson being injured

Curran is a stop gap selection as stokes can’t bowl, or he wouldn’t have played this test.

Come New Zealand it’s evens he won’t start the first test

Going forward he has to be ahead of woakes at test level

I think he will, but only because they'll say to Anderson - have a rest lad, get fit for South Africa.

So it'll be Broad, Archer, Curran.
