Wonder why this ground was never developed as a test match venue over the years like other inner city grounds like Headingley,Trent Bridge, etc?

Presumably he means, when Durham became a 1st class county they didn't move into Ashbrooke.

Maybe they didn't want to put off supporters from north of the river? Maybe the Sports Club wanted to continue (it's more than a cricket ground). Maybe the given the redevelopment, the access and the potential traffic disruption it would be cheaper and cleaner to develop a brand new ground at CLS and given that it's in Co. Durham Don Robson as leader of the county council would be in an ideal position to ease things through.

(I can recall the minor counties played the touring Australians at Ashbrooke, in around 1967 or 8 I think).

someone was saying that its had a bit of work done on it recently?

I first played at Ashbrooke as a 15yr old, for Durham County U15's, a long, long time ago.
I was playing in the Durham County League, playing at places like Dean and Chapter and Evenwood.
As I walked out to bat, got to the middle, and looked back at the Pavillion I felt I was playing at a Test Match ground !
The playing surface was huge ! They played right into all four corners of the ground. This includes what is now the artificial tennis courts. The banked seating was still in place in several areas.
The ground has suffered over the years and is only a shadow of what it was.
Due to that first game, it remains my favourite club ground.
It could never be developed as a modern first class ground due to the surrounding residential area but it remains a special place.

Apparently M.Robson wanted to take Durham CCC to Ashbrooke but wasn't able to gain planning permission to extend the ground so decided on The Riverside instead

Good

Pity the County ground could not have need built in Durham

I think in terms of attendance and therefore money coming into the club Ashbrooke would have been the best place.

Might not be the traditionalists ideal place but think we could have been a more successful club with its main base in Sunderland due to being in a more populated area.

Whilst I think The Riverside is a fantastic ground I think it's location has limited chance for progression for the domestic side of things.

The year of your U15 appearance?

You could argue Gateshead would have been a more ideal location if centre of a large population area is the main criteria.
