Asda and Morrisons rationing fruit and Veg

If this was the only planet on earth, we'd have to go without tomatoes in the winter...nature isn't into "I want it all year round"
And yet it’s only Britain that has a shortage. A point you repeatedly ignore for some reason, as if you thought “taking back control” meant you not taking any responsibility for your idiotic political choices.
You just know someone will say it's because of Brexit.
Because it is. Your complete lack of understanding of how the single market and customs union work doesn’t change that fact.

I’ve been into a couple of different local Aldis over the last week and the veg sections in both have been empty as fuck.

No problems in our local greengrocers, plenty tomatoes and peppers there, so I have to wonder if its a bit like the “egg shortage” where its more a case of the price going up a bit and the supermarkets not wanting to pay any more for them.

And Ireland which last time I checked is in the EU and the Musgrave Group is definitely reporting issues.

This has nothing to do with Brexit and is why every reputable source is reporting exactly that. The only people reporting that is nobodies on Twitter yet it's funny people people usually get mocked for doing exactly that.

It's very much more likely the supermarkets don't want to pay the price because of the shortages and hence they're getting no supply. This was the prices last week. Not to mention some of the European supermarkets in particular Carrefour is based in Spain so will have a distribution network there.

It's a short term problem caused by a shortfall from UK growers, so they aren't going to blow up their existing supply chains to fix it. Pre Brexit they would have imported more to cover the gap, post Brexit that isn't really possible.

Source - One of my best mates who is the Logistics Director at the one of the big supermarket chains.

UK growers don't knock out many tomatoes this time.of year... Too expensive to heat the greenhouses and not enough natural light . I live next to some of the largest glasshouses in the country

Yes, it is.

Pre Brexit they would have rearranged their supply chains and diverted resource to do the Algeciras/Valencia runs and solved this in a couple of days. Can't do that now without huge costs and hassle, and that's if you can find anyone willing to do it, so they won't bother.

Still about 5-10% of supply in the winter though I think.

Remember you only need a shortfall of a few % to cause 'shortages'. People forget that these things are modelled within a millisecond and any little bumps cause issue at the end.

Well apart from:
2017 - Tip of the iceberg: lettuce rationing broadens to broccoli and cabbage

and all the Irish supermarkets which having the same issues which last time I checked are in the EU. It happens all the time. Brexit won't help but it isn't the cause.

Agreed on the side that were not growing anything though mind and the government should be critisised for that instead, farmers have been left to rot with the energy increases and aren't getting the support they need. It's something that should be discussed more but it's been overshadowed by other things. Even the Telegraph has turned over it - The Tories have abandoned farmers – and risk losing the rural vote

In Malaga for a month as we are having work done on our home in France before we return to the UK for the next few months.

It’s being reported carefully here because ultimately it looks as though it’s down to climate change, something we will have to adapt to as the new normal until we embrace new methods of farming. I’m sure our government are on top of this.

Where it’s complicated for us is that as others have said, supply chains to the UK are greatly limited as a result of Brexit. The reduced supply finds it’s way into the common market far more easily for producers. Why bother with the UK, too much paperwork and cost.

The usual screwballs in the UK will I guess still be throwing rocks at the moon. Keep on brexiting brexiters.
