Asda and Morrisons rationing fruit and Veg

Call me a cynic but is this not just another excuse to frighten customers and put up prices,
M&S are saying they accept that they have found some shortages they have acted and found other markets. Tesco, Sainsbury, Aldi and Lidl are not rationing veg.
No.

Brexit means that the UK is no longer a member of the EU. As a result we get whatever is left after the rest of Europe is supplied.

Hence why we have shortages and they don’t.

Add to that a government that refuses to adequately reduce energy bills and farmers can’t afford to grow anything either.

But we got are cuntry back.

When I was a kid we could buy tomatoes grown in the UK...it's a canny system self sufficiency.
And how do you propose to do that given that farmers can’t afford heat or light to grow things?

But yeah, let’s make sure British people have far fewer choices of food than literally the rest of the western world. That’ll be a fantastic advertisement for “global Britain”.

We now import more tomatoes from Morocco because Brexit has made it more difficult to import from Spain.
Nowt to do with Brexit though.
Correct, our current shortage of tomatoes is nothing to do with Brexit.

I was just saying we grew our own, I meant no offense. It's not a competition, there are advantages and disadvantages to living in all western countries.

Maybe if we could grow our own…. And have somebody to pick them?

There was a programme on the radio at the weekend where British farmers weren't bothering to grow cucumbers because they couldn't get anyone in from Europe to pick them. Maybe it's a bit of both?

Also said why so much of the veg in shops is going off quicker; due to taking longer to get here through customs red tape, the veg is days less fresh than it used to be.

Million percent true that. Some stuff goes off long before the sell by date. So much gets wasted. Makes me think I should buy some of my own strawberry plants.

Sometimes the meat fridges in Aldi/Lidl are empty. Probably just staffing issues/bad management rather than shortages like.
The one at Millfield used to get bulk buyers from takeaways and health food/gym type suppliers. They would often clear the place out although I've not been in since Covid.

And just for the benefit of @Butcher's Coat I recently bought a box of tomatoes that cost over £6. Whilst some were tasty, they definitely weren't worth the money.

Personally I don't buy foreign tomatoes this time of the year.
I might succumb to buy the early Jersey's around late May, but I always wait until my crop blooms in late July.
