Are The Moralists Still Not Watching?

Why exactly does it bother people so much that others see things differently?
I'm watching the World cup but I have absolutely no problem with anyone who isn't.

Nowadays, it feels like there is this anger toward anyone who have a different opinion. People try to shame them into feeling like their OPINION is somehow wrong.

I mean, cutting someone up because they AREN'T watching TV? I wish I had that problem.

Life's way too short to spend it forcing others to be just like you.
Most of the people not watching it are just getting on not watching it. I haven't heard one non watcher say that others shouldn't.

Russia is a different kettle of fish and that should be obvious to absolutely anyone.

Qatar is a small Arabic backwater that was colonised through history because of its geo-stategic location, but its people were generally left alone to do as they please. All of a sudden they got independence and a small amount of oil wealth and started a gradual integration with the outside world. Russian has been the largest country in the world, with a huge empire and massive geopolitical interests.

Qatari human rights abuses are down to misguided and outdated views on the world which are slowly changing, albeit not fast enough, while Russia's are to serve their own interests. Qatar aren't a rogue state, they just haven't evolved.

You imply that Qatar's regime act out of ignorance, that's not the case at all. People in control there, like all of the ME, are well educated, some in Oxford or Cambridge. The human rights record in ME countries is appalling, in Saudi they behead women for witchcraft, ffs!

Hateful, bigoted and obscenely wealthy 'men' are using Islam to brutally suppress their people and migrant workers, whom they consider worthless except to work like machines for them. If a few thousand die, they don't care. Plenty more disposable people are ready to take their place.

The people in power in the ME could make 'their' countries a free paradise for every one of their citizens. They choose to rule them with a medieval religious iron fist. They are utter scum.

First game of the tournament I’m watching. I’m laid up on the sofa with flu, the Mrs has fucked off out and if I had the energy, I’d probably watch Netflix.

Lots of gimps with full pints in pubs and fanzones across the land and that makes me feel a bit better.

As much as I disagree with their broader position on lgbt and women's rights, as others have rightly pointed out, we dont exactly have a fantastic record in that space in recent history so I think its difficult for us to moralise on that anyway.

No it isn't. It's very, very easy. For me, anyway.

Our record on women's and LGBT rights is incomparable to the ME.

Could be talking about the UK there mate.

No problem and fair question. For me it was the worker deaths that have been reported at circa 6,500 people. To put that into context, zero people died on the construction of the London Olympics and, as much as we think China are bad, only about ten died in the construction of their olympics. With that in context, there is no way so many people should have died like that and it doesn't feel right to watch.

Yeah I think you've summed my point up there regarding human rights. They are playing catch up and it wasn't so long ago gay people were 2nd class citizens here and black people in the USA had to sit on the back of buses. The health and safety question is a different matter. I'm led to believe its improved but still not very good.

We've had a dramatic and consistent improvement in fatalities since WW2 with some absolutely fantastic and extremely handsome Environmental and H&S professionals ensuring tighter legislation is enforced on site.

Ignorance? I said misguided. Religion plays a huge part in life there and drastic change leads to a religious backlash like in Iran.

For Qatar see Saudi in 2030. We know middle Eastern nations sponsor international terrorism so not a different kettle of fish at all really. This is the argument the mags come out with, whataboutery at its core

Was our record historically good? I'm sure all the homosexuals imprisoned for being themselves disagree.

Massively different. Qatar funded media expose and oppose many of the actions of other Middle East countries. Why do you think the others blockade Qatar? Its very, very obviously different. Call me a mag and you'll have bother Russia couldn't give you ;)

we could go through different countries morals all night......we certainly as a country are not angels...........as for USA well people in Qatar will look at them and see hatred , murders , rape , etc etc.........so if the moralists are not watching football matches because of the terror , hatred in other countries then USA will be a boycott too

Just watch football and them great players and unity they have.....leave your morals out of it
You are a bit silly aren't you. Why should you put your morals to one side, just for a game of football

Maybe should've joined us and not watched at all ;) Haway the non - voyeurs. !!
That would make me a hypocrite for not boycotting events from other dodgy nations, buying stuff from dodgy sources or not being perfect. The trouble is people only seem to give a fuck when it suits their agenda and not other times.
