Are pubs finished?

Never liked a local. Always went to Town and now will go to Sunderland, Newcastle, Ouseburn, Fish Quay/Tynemouth.

Going out for beers has never been more vibrant or varied, IMHO.

Thought i had seen somewhere it had been granted cos i thought where are people going to park cos thats a nitemare roundabout
Aye, two parking space but you have to drive over the pavement to park on them. Theres parking available a bit further up the road but its outside of people houses who will generally use that space. It's a really poorly designed road for pedestrians considering it's outside a school not sure how they could fix it like.

I do think folks behaviour has changed since covid. Lot more drinking in the house. Some not drinking at all. Midweeks are dead like to be fair. Pubs in the town probably make enough from a home game to carry them through the week. Not sure if student nights are still a thing in town.
A lot aren’t though hence my point. Loads aren’t opening a few days a week.
Dead as a doornail, two or three years on from now you'll struggle to find one.
That’s how it seems to be going
I was in York on Saturday. Packed all over
Saturday, exactly
The one down Jesmond Vale?
Sea road
british culture is changing, and the downfall of the local pub is a side effect of that

people just don't go out to socialise in person as much any more. it can all be done from your smart phone from the comfort of your couch

i remember in the 90s me and my sister would be babysat every single saturday night by my nana and granda whilst me mam and dad were out. was a weekly routine. if that happened now the parents would be derided. then you add in the cost of going out, and its even less attractive

then you can add into the mix the massive influence of being encouraged to live healthier lifestyles, theres more and more people drinking less and less, eating healthier and generally looking after themselves more than in previous generations, its big business now

add into that the abundance of other things there are to do nowadays, especially with children, and its another blow for the pub. taking kids on days out is a weekly occurance on the weekend now for loads of families, theres stacks to do. in the 90s we rarely went anywhere organised, we just played out all day.

i remember parenting when we were kids, literally getting thrown out the back of the pub with the other kids to kick a ball around the back lane and be happy with a bottle of pop and packet of scampi fries.

then you also have the social media aspect of things, where many people only get once every couple of months, so it has to be a big special one, not a saturday down the local

covid hasn't helped like. and the price of beer along with every other thing you do in this country being a fortune adds into the mix. combined, its not a good mix. i still think my first point above is having the biggest effect
Absolutely is. Younguns don’t meet every week to go drinking. My local used to be busy every day when I was 18 to 22

Pub Co’s who own public houses, rent them to landlords with over priced barrels are a major factor in why local pubs aren’t doing so well. They cream the margins and hike up prices on beers sales which isn’t sustainable and hasn’t been for over two decades now.
Unfortunately, as mentioned above, the health considerations associated with drinking mean the government can’t oppose this.

I don’t see that pubs will ever cease to be in the UK. I just think there’ll be far fewer and those that do survive will thrive.

Two local pubs to me are being turned into corner shops now. Sad to see. Newcastle centre was busy on Saturday afternoon when I was out but came back to Sunderland and went for a couple in Port of Call and it was dead by 10pm.

This. The copt hill finally looks to have got it right now judging on my visit last week after having loads of short term tenants over recent years. Hope it does well.
Other than a Saturday or day of a mag game it’s dead through here. Food places do ok but we go out during the week and it’s dead.
not really, my local is doing aright, would have plenty of money in the bank anarl but the electric and gas have put a dint in adding more to it.

Monday rammed all day with older retired folk, on the night get about 40/50 people playing poker, few drinkers, most drink fizzy pop (make more money on that than drink)
Tuesday - dead (opens at 7 like) only really busy if sunderlands on.
Wedneday - see above
Thursday - opens at 5, poker night on again (bigger money than the monday) gets about 20 people in for just that then add the thursday start of weekend, mainly drinkers.
Friday - busy from 2pm till 1am as have some decent bands on a night
Saturday - hectic all day till about 1am
Sunday - just the bar but busy all day

need to take £3500 to break even, currently taking about £5/7k a week.

other places i can see falling by the wayside though.
Yes but Peterlee has very few pubs and few other things to do.

Alot of those out in Newcastle on Saturday had bags with them so presume they were getting trains down to London at some point in the day so probably not an accurate measure of the average Saturday afternoon.

To gigs mainly. I might meet someone in Gosforth or Jesmond.

Was in Sunderland a few weeks back on a Wednesday(Pop Recs) and it was utterly dead.
We were on Grey St last week and 2 bars we were the only people in.

People get the train there on weekends and go shopping then have drinks. In the summer there’s quite a few tourists. During a normal week it’s very quiet and there’s no way this can continue.

There will be an equilibrium and some will close and others will open. I think the North East has a massive amount of cracking places to go to.

Even if 50% of the bars closed in Tyne and Wear there would be still a massive selection.

Was on here talking about it a few weeks ago, we came up with three or four pubs left, in the whole west of Kayll Rd, Sunderland, area, that's from the riverside at Pallion, past Ford estate, Pennywell, Grindon, Thorney, Farra and on down to Grangetown, there maybe one or two we missed, but even so, that area covers a lot of people, the few that are still left are just about hanging on. will they still be there two years down the line? I think not.

And yet it does.

Like it always has.
You’re too old and past it to understand. I’ve been going out since I was 17 and I’m 44. The tide has turned big time. Younguns don’t do what 90s youth culture did with pubs crawls and such. Many adults won’t pay beer prices and lots are used to staying home. Social media has made a dent too. I’m right old man

The money will run out. Naks won’t dish out money time and time again for businesses to fail.

Aye they’ll be shut soon enough. People will just stop in and go on the computer with a few cans and a lasagne

🤣🤣

Give ower, man. I've drank more green paint than you've drank beer. You're just a novice.

There has been, and always will be, pubs on these sceptred isles. There might not be as many as there have been in the past, but they'll be around in one form or another long after me and you are worm food.

Blue Bell was busy when I called in on Friday night.

They’re finished mate. Few years time when this place is finished you’ll be sat with a VR Headset on talking to the likes of Harry Angstrom having taken a pill that makes you feel like you’re drinking a pint while wearing a futuristic Lycra suit

Aye weekends that’s it.
