He's got lucky all tournament. If Portugal or France had finished second we have been knocked out ages ago and then we got massively lucky playing Ukraine and Denmark to get to the final. Even my gran could've managed us past those two

Not schooled as in Jack Ross was a great manager for us? We were deservedly beaten, just so happened we were lucky it got to penalties
You’re creating your own argument there

I'm not a Southgate hater but it was clear from about 30 mins on that Italy were likely to score.

Football is all about momentum and pressure and we sat back Hoping for 1-0 and allowed Italy to take control.

With our young squad we were always on the back foot to win by penalties.

It was a performance where we were to frightened to lose to push on to get a win.

This is the same mindset and set of mistakes that cost us against Croatia too at the World Cup.

We take a lead and then sit back and throw it away.

To be fair either Southgate got the 2nd half onwards wrong or Mancini got it right
While you are correct Italy probably had the strongest team in the tournament. Their midfielders were excellent as were Chiesa and Insigne. Their CB's were awesome last night. However, other than their scruffy goal Pickford had one real save to make from Chiesa - we were better first half, they were better 2nd and the extra time was pretty even. If we had won on penalties no one would have said it was a travesty of justice.

This thread and many others remind how smug football fans are - if only we'd done what I thought, we'd be OK. We've had threads slagging off Southgate, Mount, Kane and no doubt others. We have ended up unbeaten in this tournament and got the semi-final in the WC. Its fine margins and England were certainly one of the best teams in the tournament. It reminds me of any time Sunderland lose you get smug posters like the OP coming on explaining to one and all the easy solutions that should be followed. If only the FA had someone like Chris advising them.

Grow up man

Maybe it's not the moment to criticize, but all I can say is that our performance, apart from the opening 15 mins, was awful in football terms. I felt negative from the moment I read Foden was injured - any hope of football down the spout. How many misplaced passes did we make? How many hopeless punts out of the area. I didn't watch the penalties as the result was so obvious. Btw, Southgate might have destroyed Saka's career.

Well done Roberto Mancini.

England, and Sunderland, please take note.

Just f***ing bullshit on England. Southgate is a superb man manager, who has full support of his players and has turned England into a club side with spirit. He took a stinking group, who lost to Iceland, and turned them into the most competitive side we've had for years. Yes, a lot of good young players coming through - young players he has nurtured both now and in his previous role. Furthermore, he has made a number of absolutely brilliant tactical decisions this tournament and yeah, a couple of mistakes here and there. But not too many: we were a penalty shoot out away from glory.

You can diminish his achievements, say it's about not having a "proper manager" but we went that way didn't we? Mancini can only dream of the tactical impact and trophy cabinet of a Fabio Capello but it did fuck all for us - and we had a squad garlanded with Champions League winners. Belgium have an amazing squad, but they never get as far as we have here. It's. Not. As. Easy. As. Everyone. Is. Making. Out.

Sunderland? Aye, he's a f***ing whopper.

   I dinnar how yay dare.

Someone has been waiting for this moment to have a pop at a manager who has got it right 98% of the tournament, and even the 2% was unlucky due to pens.
Are we just always going to claim that penalty shootouts are down to luck?
Wasn't just a penalty shootout, 34% possession, 19 shots v 6. We were lucky it made it to penalties
The most incredible stat for me was that our main n striker Kane never touched the ball in their penalty area and never had a single shot. (According to Lineker)
