Cheers TLR!

Just wanted to post about this that I just found, which may be "the answer" - everything Apple TV/WDTV/etc has, but also everything you wanted in them but couldn't get:

Cheap - 99 of your English pounds.

Powerful - Samsung 1ghz Cortex A8 ARM CPU (should be significantly gruntier than the Apple A4 in the ATV)

HD capable - HDMI with h/w 1080p H.264/MPEG2/MPEG4 decoding

Well connected - 3 x USB, HDMI, LAN, Wifi, SD card, Bluetooth, keyboard, mouse, remote control, etc, etc. From the CPU datasheet, there should also be USB OTG (ie device mode, eg. connect the box to your PC) and S/PDIF on the board if you want to wire a connector yourself.

Form - small, low power, fanless.

Completely open - best of all, a general purpose ARM box that you can hoy whatever software you like onto (comes with Android 2.2)

I think I'm going to order a shit load of these. Could well be the box I've been looking for for ages, that not only does network media player duties, but also all the other good stuff (asterisk, wifi access point, NAS, webcam portal, etc, etc).

Interesting that they also offer the micro keyboard/touchpad that I just posted about a few days ago (as it's perfect for an HTPC):

This box isn't a Kogan design btw, it's a generic Chinese OEM job (see a manufacturer demo here) that's also sold by others.

Haway then, when do they go on sale and can you just plug an external HDD into it and away ya go?

May, and yes.You can plug three in if you like!

I've tracked down the Chinese manufacturer and am going to give them a call tomorrow to see if I can't get some direct, now. Though my Mandarin's a bit rusty so I'll probably end up with special fried rice.

IIRC you can get custom (homebrew) firmwares for that, adding all sorts of extra features, like torrenting from it, in much the same was as you can with some routers and Dreamboxes.

I'd buy it over the ATV for that alone, sad to say.

Well, it appears to do everything I need. Want some additional memory to stream media around, want to watch some of said media on telly. Ordered, should be here on Tuesday...

I like the look if this !

Would you be able to watch flash sport streams on it ?

Also, what type of storage is it, would I get my photos and videos on it ?

Looks like an android mobile on your tv, is that what it is or is it better, faster etc ?

Cheers.

The very fact that it's open and has hardware acceleration for MPEG2/4/H264 means you'll be able to do anything with it, except perhaps high profile H.264 at full HD (which not even Tegra 2 can do). It'll be a big hit with homebrew OS developers, I reckon, so there'll be a lot of open source firmwares and features available for it.

It doesn't have any internal mass storage, but 3 USB ports and an internal SD slot mean you can add flash memory or connect USB sticks and hard drives.

I did some research on this and now know who makes it (in China), and have the documentation for the CPU/chipset (a Samsung SoC that's like the Apple A4 but better), if anyone's interested.

Thanks for the reply.

I'd tried to pm you but your box is full !

I'm not very techy savvy but know the apple versions of this thing are pricey.

This looks ideal and cheap as owt !

Mods can we lock this thread.......HBT appears to be promoting a non-Apple product when everyone knows that Apple is best and I've got an Apple and he hasn't got an Apple and I painted my Apple white - WHITE!!

Tidied.

How your craic hasn't topped itself yet, I'll never understand. I can't begin to imagine the hell of being told to repeat a two year old phone over and over again, as the answer to everything.
