Apparently we can leave players out of the squad and they won't count towards the salary cap.

We have Burge, Matthews, O’Nien, McClaughlin, Wright, Flanagan, Willis, Hume, power, Scowen, Leadbitter, Dobson, Gooch, McGeady, Maguire, O’Brien, Wyke and Grigg all over 21. Patterson, Diamond, Neil, Feeney, Taylor, Embleton all under 21.
I make that 24, some won’t make the squad if we’re signing anyone else.
The players who are under 21 don't count towards the 22 man squad.

According to this article:

Players we don't want (like McGeady) can be left out of the 22 man squad and so won't count towards the salary cap. As an aside I think we tried to sign that Naismith but he went to Peterborough instead.
He doesn't count to very much of it, so we'd be losing a good player but gaining the average league 1 salary.

McGeady is a bad egg, bully who half the team couldn’t stand if rumours are to be believed. His replacement (Maguire) looked better than him once he fucked off anyway.

Maguire did well yes, but I'm just sure anybody can say we did better after Mcgeady was left out. The history books will say otherwise.

We should probably take the opportunity to leave Wyke out and use his wage to sign someone who has a bit of pace, or strength, or general awareness, or skill. Heaven forbid a bit of all of those.

The way to stimulate academy growth if they are really serious about sustainability is to not count academy graduates within the salary cap. They'd probably have to put some reuirements such as minimum of 3 years in the academy.
