Anyone walked over a frozen pond/lake?

It's like one of those things you try to push yourself to dare try but can't, it looks safe but its not.

Saw a load of people doing it at Ullswater a few winters back. Going on there with kids and dogs, nearly getting across to the 1st island. We walked to the end of the jetty where you could still see the bottom of the lake, but not beyond that.

Did it on siky lakes with few others when age about 12/13… stupid thing to do . Would hate to see anyone doing it as we all know what outcome could be , and if you saw inevitable happen would you cross the ice to try and help ??

For my own kids, yep. It isn't even worth thinking about.

My mate went through the ice on Mowbray park pond. (1981 ish)I was behind him. He was heavier than me. It was hilarious. Water went up to his knackers😀😀

Ice-skated on one in Sweden, also drove across it pulling a few handbrake skids on the way. They get used as shortcuts over there in the winter.
The sound of the ice expanding and cracking on a massive remote lake is one the eeriest noises you will ever hear.

In the winter of 62/63 the ice on the marshes (maybe a foot deep) was so thick, we lit fires on it. A few posh kids skated without problems.

When I worked in Holland me and a mate would go skating on the canals after work. All the locals did it so it must have been safe.

Snowmobiled over a large remote lake, in mid -winter in Canada. I was well pissed and stoned up, so I don't remember much. except that the snow which was kicked up, and then filtered through the moonlight was sparkling and magnificent. I swore that I saw a bit fly off the moon that night too.!

No, I've done some stupid stuff, but not daft enough to do that, putting yourself and anyone trying to helps lives in jeopardy
