Anyone ever had a Gas Meter or Electricity Meter moved?

Looking to sort out a new bathroom downstairs. Planning to knock through from the existing bathroom and use a bit of the hall cupboard to form a larger area for a shower.

The one complication is that both the meters and the consumer unit are in that part of the cupboard and would need to be moved.

Who would do this? Is it something that the gas or electric company would need to be involved with? Or can it just be a gas engineer/ electrician?

Anyone done similar?

Just do it yourself over a weekend mate. No one needs to know.

If your electricity cut out (unit that holds the fuse and has your incoming power supply terminated into it) is there which I’d expect it would be then you’ll need a service alteration via your local distribution network operator (people who manage the electricity network) to move the cable, your supplier moves your meter and your electrician runs tails from the isolator back to your DB.

If all of this equipment is upstairs be prepared for it to have to go downstairs (new regs at least in England)
See you’re from Edinburgh so you’ll need to contact SP energy (DNO who manage your electricity network

If it’s north east England then it’s northern powergrid

Any questions DM me

I’d imagine it’s a very similar concept for the gas so I’d have a look on your gas distributors site to see how that works. Again if it’s north east England it’s northern gas networks, don’t know who it’ll be in jock land
Oh, and you’ll have to arrange all the moves so contact the DNO, contact your supplier and arrange your own electrician

Infotastical. A great example of how you can ask a question on here on someone will have the detail.

Thanks for the help.

Having had a further look at it, I want the whole lot shifted to the other side of the same wall.

The existing meters, isolator and consumer unit for the electric are all attached to a backboard fixed to the wall. The gas meter sits below that, with pipes coming up through the floor. The wall is a load bearing wall, the other side of which has a single garage on it. I want all of the electric gear off that wall inside the house and put on the other side of the same wall but inside the garage. I can build a cupboard round it at some point if needed.

The more I think about it, I am not sure about the best order to do this.

Gas or electric first?
With the electric, so I get the meter moved first and then get the electrician in after to shift the rest? Or the other way round? Or even both here together to do the job?

You’ll need the cut out moving first (it’ll be either a grey or black box possibly with 60A, 80A or 100A on it - could even be a combination of those) that’s your incoming supply which can be done via the links I put on above

When you get your date for that you’ll need to get your supplier out the same day (but after the cut out has been moved) as you’ll have no supply until the meter is moved and you’ll need to get your electrician on site preferably at the same time as the meter people to do his bit after they’ve moved the meter

Don’t get everything lined up on the same day you’ll not be able to use your leccy.

DM me a photo of all of your electric equipment if you want and I’ll have a look
Just realised I put the wrong link on for scotland

This is the one you want

I’m confused. Does all the electricity stuff need to be done on the same day?

Can there be a break between the isolator being moved and the meter being moved?

Who puts in the new backboard to hold all the gear?

Northern Gas had to move my gas box. It was located internally, but apparently it’s meant to be external?

Yeah has to be done asap between each team being out, if you don’t get all 3 sorted same time you’ll not be able to use electric

The DNO (first people you need) will put a new backboard on for their supply, meter and isolator

Check the picture at the bottom of the last link I put on, that shows who does what

My gas meter is in the corner of the kitchen near floor level. When I got the new kitchen in I looked into getting it moved outside but it was going to cost a fortune so i just built the units round it. I've got to stick my arm in the unit with my phone to take a photo of the meter readings.
A couple of years ago the gas board got in touch and said that I had to have a new one, I told them that it wasn't accessible but they still booked in an engineer. He came round and admitted that he would have had to damage the units so I sent him on his way.

Bear in mind, yes you’d need to contact the DNO (UK Power Networks for the North East) first to have a date of move and then the supplier for the disconnection/reconnection of the supply. But both will hold a cost, it’s classed as cosmetic works, the DNO can hold a charge of £1000s to move depending on how far you are moving it, and then your supplier will charge you for the appointments, I worked for one on the big 6 for many years until very recently and that charge was £80 per appointment.
