You have constructed a room onto your existing loft joists, which are massively undersized for the loads presented by furniture etc. They are only designed to hold your ceilings up and support your roof structurei got loft done, classed as storage but basially a bedroom but without the steels etc put in. Proper staircase up and velux window in and all under 5k. be over 10 yr like
f***ing hell man. Even the loft kits you buy in Wickes etc have got extenders you can fit for them. Bloke should have known that. I've a similar height ceiling and we had to put one on. Was actually only one step of the extender and had to saw off and chuck the rest. Felt cheated.I had someone come out to assess a drop down ladder for my place... they dont make ladders that size? Wtf
The ceiling is 10ft high. Make a god damn ladder that reaches. Got a joiner and he sorted it no issue
Let's face it there are thousands of homes up and down the country that have done this, from flooring them out with weyroc to store the xmas tree etc up to creating a cheap bedroom. Either way roof trusses are not designed to carry such weight, they're only held together with nail gang plates, I'm surprised they don't just tear apart with the stress. How surveyors doing home buyers reports don't flag this up is beyond me.You have constructed a room onto your existing loft joists, which are massively undersized for the loads presented by furniture etc. They are only designed to hold your ceilings up and support your roof structure

Just had a quote for 16ftx16ft for £960. On a raised floor. £1800 to do my full loft space. Plus a couple of extra lights.Fancy getting mine boarded out, how much am I looking at or shall I just do it myself ?
I did the same back in 2004, and got caught by a building inspector who made me remove a third of the flooring and remove all of the plasterboards from the walls. This was so it could not be used as a room where someone could spend a length of time (bedroom, study etc). He explained about the load bearing capacity of the 2x4 joists that lofts are made from. He also said if we used it as a bedroom (that was my original plan), and an accident occurred, there are severe penalties and possibly jail sentences if someone is hurt.aye but they put more joists in the opposite way crossing the others, and yes i know that but it was for a kids bedroom nowt else. Everyone on our estate has it done the same , in fcat most ex council houses are like that.
Does it not matter aslong as the floor can support it? Looks like who was in previous as had floor boarded and lights put in and a fire window.I did the same back in 2004, and got caught by a building inspector who made me remove a third of the flooring and remove all of the plasterboards from the walls. I’ve had a loft done properly since in a different house, with steel beams added and a full staircase, linked smoke alarms and velux windows. Not much change out of nearly 30 grand, but it’s all signed off and will add value to the house if we sell it
There’s loads been done like that, as someone said earlier. They should be properly surveyed and structurally assessedDoes it not matter aslong as the floor can support it? Looks like who was in previous as had floor boarded and lights put in and a fire window.
