Any architects on here?

Stuck in between staying or moving house so want to weigh up all my options.

I want to redesign my house a bit and want to know if I can get my hands on any architect software to play about with designs for my house. I have a redrawing of my layout plan but I can’t do anything with it really just measure distances.

Any software and can get for free or buy to do this?

AutoCAD is probably the easiest of the free options (you can buy the actual version with all the bells and whistles) but the free one is fine for a simpler plan of a building to get an idea.

As @Lefty Frizzell says, CAD is still probably the easiest to get your head around.

If you can be bothered to sit on YouTube for a few hours and watch tutorials on revit, this maybe your best option. It’s life like and you’ll get a full render once you’re done. You can get a free 30 day trial by signing up on autodesks website.

Less architecty than AutoCad, there’s sketchup. Quite straightforward to use. Doesn’t give you architectural type plans but good for visualising 3d models.

Wheres the free version mate?

Paid a fortune for a licence in the past.

The problem is that you may draw something that’s impractical or would cost a fortune. E.g. you could erase a line on a plan but in reality it could be a load bearing wall.

I’m an expert in most things but I’m not an architect or a structural engineer.

This all sounds like a sufficient enough fuck on for me to think "bollocks to it, we're moving" especially when you start factoring in the price and fuck on of paying for architect, structural engineer, building regs, builders and other trades. That's before working out whether your project is worth it in terms of the value it will add and the inconvenience of living in a building site.

This is your best option I reckon. There are some free rendering add ons too, but not sure how good they are.

I found SketchUp a bit fiddly and not that straightforward really. I am thick mind

If it's only floorplans and internals Floorplanner was way easier.

Try Draftsight, it used to be free. If not you should be able to get a free 30 day trial of that or Autocad.

Never used draftsight but AutoCAD isn’t exactly easy to use out of the box. I predict a lot of swearing and then the dummy spat out.
