Another summer of terrible recruitment

Screaming out for pace up front and out wide, creativity In midfield. Who do we get? A 35 year old forward who we flogged 5 years ago. Still hoping we get the lad from Bristol City but I doubt we will.

I’m afraid I have to agree. None of the summer signings who were totally new have impressed me. O’Brien already looks like a lemon and the keeper is shit, there’s just no other word for it. I reserve judgement if this Kosovoan lad signs.

And if we sign Graham, I’ll bet on a forth year in this league now. He will be the worst signing any club makes this summer, hands down.

I'm unsure how you can be so confident about our recruitment.

O'Brien has replaced McNulty imo, he's basically someone that will come off the bench, I just can't see him dramatically improving our first team, I hope I'm wrong. Bailey-Wright was already here. Matthews is a backup keeper.

Where have we improved our first team? Power and Dobson, both inconsistent and pretty average, they are still in the frame for first team football. Wyke awful yet still starting friendly games. We've lost McLaughlin. No competition for Maguire and Gooch's places apart from Diamond, who is still unproven. No competiton in either wing back positions.
According to Millwall fan and journo Rod Liddle in the Sunday Times two weeks ago when discussing the league one and two salary cap, he said O’Brien was on £6k a week at the New Den and wouldn’t have joined Sunderland for less money so he’d be a luxury bench player you’d think!
He’s surely been signed as a starter to improve our first choice eleven?

That's surprising, however he did sign before the salaray cap didn't he so I believe his salary will be counted as 2.5k per week as opposed to 6k per week. I may have misinterpreted how the cap's calculated mind, but that's how I read it.

I think we're getting Danny Graham who's a natural in both of those positions, or he was 15 years ago.

So we play him in midfield now, doesn't matter about goals, we won’t worry about that small matter eh.
Let’s just get a bloke in who no one else wants, isn’t fit, too old, but he used to play for us though so let’s have him.
Hopefully Parkinson isn’t allowed to sign him by the people who fund the deal, surely everyone hasn’t gone nuts down that club.

Matthews is questionable, other three look solid, Kosovan looks to have potential should he sign. Still need a centre forward, attacking midfielder and cover at left wing back. Can judge if/ when we bring those in and properly judge five or six games in- Grigg and Wyke are better than we have as yet seen.

We'll sign a LWB, not sure the Garbutt deal is dead - offer is still on the table, who else is coming for him? Either way, this position will be our priority.

I don't think we'll sign an attacking midfielder, I think Neil's performance in friendlies will encourage Parkinson to discount that. Possibility of a loan signing perhaps here, but we'll see. Certainly not before window approaches.

I think he wants a striker and he wants Graham, but not sure Graham will sign for the wages we'll offer. Not sure we have other targets lined up. Depends how Grigg goes in September, think we'll keep a bit of wage budget back to see where we are. If he starts well, we won't sign one.

Sensible post. PP has said a few times that they want to wait and see how the PL/Championship clubs do their business as players may come available who would be normally out of our reach. Other than cover at wing back I think we have a reasonably strong squad.

Dan Neil, Jack Diamond and Elliott Embleton are creative midfield players but of course they won't get a chance as Parky will play the one paced plodders like Power, Dobson and Leadbitter.

People keep saying this, yet neither Neil, Diamond, or Embleton have ever lined up in Power, Dobson or Leadbitter's position in our formation. Therefore, we have no evidence that they can do a job there.

Diamond will get a lot of minutes I think. O'Nein has one of the best engines I have seen at any level, but even he can't play 90 minutes non-stop, every game in that position and Parkinson fancies Diamond there as main cover (though I wonder if he will also try Gooch there). He'll be covering both flanks perhaps, until we sign another left-footer to compete with Hume.

As for Neil, he has looked good in the AM position and in all honesty, I would start him ahead of Gooch for Hull and see how he goes. He makes late runs to get beyond the striker which is something neither Gooch or Maguire do - he's a contender in there. He's only lined up in this position, but he looks good enough to me to take games off Maguire, Gooch and O'Brien (I see O'Brien covering Grigg more tbh).

Embleton - not enough evidence, injured again.

Why would you want any of those players playing out of position? If Power and Dobson are 1st choice central midfielders, then Scowen and Leadbitter will be their backups.

Neil, Diamond and Embleton will be battling with O'Brien, Maguire and Gooch for the attacking midfielder positions

I think we're in an ok shape. People will say we haven't kicked on, but the league is total carnage this year - we are a much more stable squad than most. Parkinson has addressed the biggest problem - we had one centre-back under contract at the start of the window, we now have a well-stocked stable and assuming, as everyone says, this promising Kosovan signs we actually look stronger.

Central midfield - if Scowen is up to speed now, we are stronger.

Attacking positions - we have more depth than last year, due to the promising youngsters.

Up front - all depends on Grigg. If the rumours about him being back on it are true, we are so much stronger.

LWB is main concern, if Hume gets injured we are in trouble. And we are weaker in the sticks, which is never ideal.

I don't marra, I'm just pointing out to all the people saying "we need to drop Dobson and Power for Embleton/Neil" that they actually play in different positions. I think Power-Scowen is much better than people on here. I'd play Neil, mind - Gooch looks off pace at moment, and everyone knows he's a form player.

Will be interesting to see who Parkinson picks in CM, will definitely be Scowen, I have a feeling he will go with Dobson. I'd go with Power myself.
