try free weights, its better for you as you use more stabilising muscles, thus burning more calories in the process. Try a full body routine with compound movements in

ask for some advice off the biggest lad in the free weights section. 9 out of 10 times they'll be more knowledgeable than a personal trainer and more than happy to help.
 
Not really, loads of the guys in gyms don't really know what they're talking about.
